Order placed: 2012 255bhp Commercial + extras!! |
|
After much faffing about I finally placed my order.
Land Rover Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 Automatic Commercial 2012 model year (255 BHP) in Fuji White.
My summary spreadsheet below....
List Price: 29175
Active Rear Diff: 625
Heated Seats: 254.17
Comm Conv Pack: 1085.33
Comm Lux Pack: 1783.34
Cool Cubby Box: 195.84
Xenon Headlamps: 591.66
Rear View Camera: 300
Power Fold Mirrors: 179.17
TOW PACK - Plug in Tow Ball inc 12N 7 PIN/12S 7 PIN UK Type Electrics 425
Then got VAT to add
Then got discount to come off
Then got NFU discount to come off
Then got to wait for it to arrive (September...)
Then got to claim VAT back
Then got to get Atlantach seats fitted
Have I missed any "must have" options. On the close but no cigar list are
* adaptive Xenons (I have them on my D3 and don't feel I am missing anything on the D4 hire car I have now by having standard Xenons)
* surround camera (a lot of cash for what seems might just be a toy most of the time)
* colour coded arches (have gone white with black arches 'cos I like ENT's car http://www.DISCO4.COM/gallery/albums/userp...200%5D.JPG and think the black arches/rear bumper may show scratches less,
* full size spare (I have some spare 19" wheels/tyres in the garage so will bang one of them on just in case)
* hybrid TV (have it on D3 and we use it now and again but will use TV Catchup on iphone instead)
* roof rails - the one item I am considering adding so I can throw some cross bars on
I have a D3 G4 now (which is great and which I am keeping) and was going to get a 110 Utility XS. I have had Series or Defender LRs for most of my driving years so the chance to get a new 110 and stick it in the company and claim VAT back and all the bills and extras and fuel bills go through the business (so I get them 'tax free') yet still only pay the 'van' rate of benefit in kind sounded ideal so I rented one for a weekend to see. While I liked it I was not sure the idea of us using it as our family car was a goer. The D3 HSE and then G4 D3 HSE I have had for the past few years appear to have made me soft...
I then saw posts about the D3/4 commercial being fitted with aftermarket seats yet still being classed as a commercial.
Anyway, two weeks ago my D3 failed its MOT on a leaking steering rack. It is being sorted under warranty but part is going to take a few weeks to come. Dealer sorted out a hire car through LR and I got a 10-plate 3.0 SDV6 HSE. To be honest there's some things I don't like about this specific car: -
* The high beam assist is crap - quick to come on but too slow to go off when cars approach
* The 'piano black' on the D4 is not as nice as the D3 - it is fitted to the dash centre just under the nav screen where your hand rests when entering NAV commands. It is always mucky. My D3 has great chunks of piano black finish down the centre console sides
* The D4 hire car doesn't have a cubby box fridge and the internal cubby box lid/tray is made of the cheapest crappiest plastic I have ever seen - it would shame a 1984 Hyundai Pony, and it rattles like mad. My D3 has a soft feel rubberised one that doesn't rattle and I wasn't sure if this is cos my D3 has the fridge.
* There is a rattle in the passenger side B-post that is driving me mad!
* I can't find where the dipstick is on the D4 and there's no handbook in the hire car and it 'feels' like it is low on oil and the service indicator is saying the service is overdue.
None of the above are problems with the car I have ordered (I hope). I am not having high beam assist, I can do that better myself ta. I am not having piano black so I assume the poverty model is the less shiny grey plastic. I have ordered a chilled cubby box and if that does come with the crappy plastic tray/lid I will source a D3 rubber one. Rattles will be sorted! I will have a handbook to help find the dipstick.....
But, after being negative there's stuff I LOVE about the D4: -
* It is a D3 but better in lots of small ways and I think my D3 is great
* The engine is phenomenal - hopefully mine with 10bhp more and 8-speed rather than 6-speed will be even better
* The economy is better than expected (despite me using the extra performance...) - My G4 D3 with MTRs and roof rack etc. shows 21mpg on the lie-ometer (20 in real life if calculated) and my prev standard D3 HSE got 23 tops wheres the D4 I have now is at 24.7 (all lie-ometer figures but hopefully show the relative savings) so am hoping to see 10% fuel reduction as the 255/8-speed is yet a bit more economical.
* The reversing camera is sometimes useful as a back up when in very tight spots - I have used it more than I expected
* The DAB works (now standard on the 2012MY as well)
So there you have it. Sorry for the long post

Great write-up Craig. Useful stuff for those who may follow your example (me ? )
There is no dipstick on the D4, it's electronically measured - yes you need the handbook to work it out.

Cracking write up and some good decisions there...
Long wait until September but it'll be worth it - changing from an Audi A6 to a Commercial saves me around £300 a month in tax...
Perfect! D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY
D5 Commercial - Handed back when I left that job…
D4 Commercial (2014MY) - gone
D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)
Smiles per Mile - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear - all fully IVA'd and registered!

I think so although I saw one today and still really want one I just don't think I could live with one long term. Bit like a Spice Girl in that respect.
ENT's looks great I think and his pics gave me the courage not spend a grand on different colours with arches in same colour although I was thinking pay the £400 or whatever so it looks a little 'Landmark-like' have decided against it - this ticking options game could go on forever
Cheers
