Slowing down for a roundabout this morning noticed a noise from the passenger side - sounded like a piece of plastic catching on a fan so pulled over to check it out. Popped the bonnet and it sounded more like diesel knock if that makes sense, turned off engine and removed engine cover - noticed when removing oil filer cap there was rather a lot of white vapour coming out normal? anyway tried to start engine and it would not have it. RAC man could not shed any light on it so it is stood outside the house now.
During this there were no bongs, bings no lights no warnings at all, I have plugged my Faultmate in this is what it came up with:

I reset the fault codes and started it up and it ran at idle but it sounded like only one bank was firing, checks with the faultmate showed fuel rail pressure around 3500kPa, everything else looked normal except for the intake air temperature sensor which showed N/A, I checked and cleaned the sensor and it seems ok.
Any ideas where to start....

Any chance the timing belt could have snapped??? 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Checked and the camshafts are turning, maybe belt has jumped Head in the clouds and a mouth full of pie

How many miles and when was last service?
A few here have had 'big end failure' and usually not long after a service/oil change but I doubt it would even run if that were the case. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

It wouldn't run at all if the belt had snapped. I would be surpried if it was possible for it to jump a tooth or two if it would run then.
fingers crossed it is a cheap fix for you. I think until it is plugged in and inspected by someone who can shed light on the codes etc...then it is just a lot of speculation.

Probably doesn't help, but when my crank started to go it sounded just like the fan catching something as it turned, a constant tick-tick-tick. Didn't get any engine faults, just got very noisy very quickly, and some white smoke from the exhaust. Disco 5 HSE Lux

Update.... Checked valve timing with special tools and it was spot on but I changed the belt and pulleys as they were due next year anyway, hope I havnt wasted my time and something sinister and expensive is wrong.
Only thing I did notice was that when I ran it after changing the belt I checked with the faultmate again and the fuel pressure was still 3500kpa on tickover and when raising the engine revs to about 2000rpm the fuel pressure would rise to about 5000kpa then drop quite dramatically to below 3000kpa and fluctuate between 3000 and 5000kpa. I know the pressure varies depending on a number of variables but I would have thought the pressure would be steady at a fixed rpm?? I am wondering if the HP fuel pump is kaput?
Anyway I am back offshore so it is stuck on the drive until the end of the month, thanks for the replies. Head in the clouds and a mouth full of pie

Update! and it's not good, changed the high pressure fuel pump bled the fuel system and started it up. Engine started up no problem but the noise was worse than ever and lots of white unburnt diesel smoke out of the exhaust. Stopped the engine and disconnected each injector in turn (while engine stopped) and when I disconnected front injector on right side looking from front the white smoke stopped and noise was less.
Dropped the sump and had a rake through and lots of chewed up White metal Anyway engine goosed, located and bought a recon lump, now I need it fitting but the cost is crazy... I am confident of doing it myself but trying to find a facility and two post lift near Sunderland is proving impossible. If anyone can help I would appreciate it
