Tints: Advice Please (& Recommendations near Brum/Worcs? |
|
New D4 due next month. Ordered without privacy and too late to change now, so although I now understand privacy is better than tints (thanks Wiggs ), it looks like tints are the only realistic option.
I did look at retro fitting privacy glass, but unless someone knows where there is some going spare / cheap, the cost for the glass alone for the back screen and rear windows is more than the total cost of the option at time of order (thanks TLO for checking that out).
So, has anyone had tints done around the Birmingham / Worcestershire area and been pleased with the result / service / cost etc?
Do the installers need to be at their own base, or could they travel to the dealer to install before handover?
Thanks D4 XS MY12 Galway

Thanks for the recommendation - has he done much for you? Do you know him, or is it just from buying tints?
Anyone else? Ideally, I'd like to talk to a couple of firms. D4 XS MY12 Galway

He has done all my own cars and many of my customers cars. I'm getting him to do my D3 soon as the last owner had it done and it's not a great job!!
Well over 50 in total, I was recommended him from another trade contact a good few years ago.
His work is very good and he has won many awards and has been doing it for many years before it became popular!
In the past I had used 2 other company's in the area but one used the wrong tint % and would not change it and the other was just a poor finish. So I just stick with the one.

Window Tints - Any Advice? |
|
Looking to get new D4 tinted - yes, I should probably have got privacy glass, but too late now.
So, does anyone have any advice or recommendations?
What is the nearest equivalent to privacy from a light transmission perspective?
Anything to watch out for?
Are there better makes than others?
Do they all use the same methods / materials etc?
Any Disco specific advice - I know that getting right to the edges on the boot side windows isn't easy / possible.
Would just like to have some idea what I'm talking about and what I want before I speak to any installers!!
Also - any idea on what I should expect to pay? Is there much variation, or are prices all fairly standard?
Thanks!

was in my local dealer today, and through in the parts department they had a board showing the various colours and options.....looked like a non-factory retro fit option....might be worth nipping into your dealer to find out....of course it may have just been a local option, but you never know....
tints went from the usual options plus blue to bronze...with varying shades "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Retro-fitting privacy glass depends on your budget! Back screen is about £300 and the side ones are over £150 each, before even looking at that rear doors. Oh, and that's parts prices, not fitted.
Anyone got a Disco with privacy glass who wishes it was clear?!! D4 XS MY12 Galway

Worth noting (depending on why you want tints) that mineral tinted glass gives no protection that good tints offer. Tints can provide upto 250SPF and UVA-C. Mineral glass provides next to nothing whatsoever. So, aftermarket tints are actually far better for the occupants and interior than factory fitted tints, which are useless. But look better.
Not that when you look at tints on a sample window, the tints will appear one level darker in the car, if that makes sense. PAGODA

The retro fit films used nowadays are quite resiliant to scratches, i've used them on my last 4 vehicles and they've never torn or scratched..
For full privacy you will need limo black, you can see out but not in, if this is too dark the next is dark smoke, gives some privacy but on a sunny day you can see into the car... If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

So, what is the nearest equivalent 'darkness' and colour to the LR factory privacy?
Are there different film qualities? D4 XS MY12 Galway
