The devil is in the detail
I have splashed out and got myself an RLD black sump plate which I fitted and it looks excellent.
More splashing out and from Goodwinch I have got a full hidden winch and kit and I am really keen to fit it. I have read every single word of hidden winch knowledge on this forum - thanks to you all - (has anyone here fitted a hidden winch to a D4, all I see is D3s) and feel pretty well equipped now to get started, with the exception of the following specific to the D4:
how to mounted the aluminium hawse, flush or surface
exactly how long and wide the hawse spacers need to be
length of bolts to mount the hawse
how to route power cables to the battery and get them into the battery box and onto the very cluttered battery posts
where to site the isolator switch
where to site the panel mounted connector for the hand control
The solenoids from Goodwinch came pre-mounted and pre-wired but they are out in the open. Should I dismantle it and put it in an enclosure?
The more info I can get before I dismantle the car, the less chance I have of having to walk to work on Monday morning cos the car is still in bits.
All help and advice gratefully accepted. (and thanks to those who already have RLD, CFB, Wiggs,)

me, myself and I
looks like your on your own..
take some photos and post so we can see the process and end result (and make it easier if we chose to do the same )
good luck amd if nothing else the walk to work will be good for your health It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

Thanks A, I'll take you up on the luck, there are still too many unknowns for my liking....

Dragging up an old topic, did you ever get to fit your hidden winch to your D4? Also, do you have front PDC or surround cams?
Cheers,
Bri

Yes indeed I did and I have been meaning to post it all on here but just never quite got around to it.
I do have PDC and the cams and it all still works post winch fitting.
When I get a minute I'll write up some notes.
Is there anything specific you want to know?2016 D4 Landmark SDV6 (Euro6), Zanzibar (late run D4)

Excellent, thanks for the reply. I guess you've pretty much answered my main questions; can it be done and can you still use the front PDC and cameras.
Which mount and winch did you use? Did you do the work yourself and how would you rate the difficulty in completing it?

Sorry for slow reply, been offline.
Winch 9.5 T, tray and whole kit fom Goodwinch. Designed for D3 and does not fit D4 without mods. Thankfully I had got an engineering outfit to fit it and they did mods for me. Cost a bit but it wouldn't have worked if I'd dome it myself.
Will post details if I get reminded ... Too many senior moments these days.2016 D4 Landmark SDV6 (Euro6), Zanzibar (late run D4)

I fitted a 12.000lb hydraulic winch with an Uncle Ray discrete winch mount. It was all pretty straightforward. The only problem was that this large a winch had a slight interference with the winch mount, which took just a bit of angle grinding to fix. The hydraulic power is supplied from the power steering pump. I had a friendly Qantas hydraulic mechanic (who fixes landing gear) cut the metal hose to the steering actuator and braised my winch connections on. The winch holds on the licence plates and with green rope it really is nearly invisible. It works a charm (I use it more to pull and stretch gas pipelines and stuck Hiluxes than for pulling the D4 out of the muck ).
Alas, I'm in the midst of a move back to Oz and photos are "somewhere", but will be posted in due course. The discrete winch mount fitted perfectly and the instructions were complete.Jim Dowell - D4 HSE TDi, 12,000 hydraulic winch & hidden winch mount, MTRs, TyreDog, Traxide 2 x aux battery system, fixed air compressor, Dolium roof rack, MitchHitch.

Unfortunately I didn't get to see it with the bumper cover off and the guy how fitted it didn't take any pics so I am not sure what he had to trim.
I recall him telling me that the tray itself needed the internal welds grinding back just to be able to seat the winch correctly in the tray - that seems to be a quality issue as both winch and tray came from same supplier - easily remedied if you have said grinder but something you shouldn't have to do.
He also mentioned that the height was not right and to get the hawse central on the bumper cover he had had to make new holes to attach the tray to the chassis.
A plate had been supplied to mount the solenoids on the RHS level with the tray but he said this did not fit there and instead he mounted the solenoids on the daigonal support bar behind the radiator grill.
In spite of the changes, I am happy with the job, though I have yet to use it in anger, just a few practice pulls across the yard so far.
I took some phone photos of the externals which I'll put in my gallery shortly and I'll add more detail when I get around to taking the radiator grill off next.2016 D4 Landmark SDV6 (Euro6), Zanzibar (late run D4)

Pics now posted, pretty grotty quality, sorry.
One thing which does not work is the free spool due to lack of height space for the level to rise as it turns. This could be remedied with an air actuator but given the non-frequent use planned for the winch I'll leave it as it is until it proves to be an issue.
Better would have been to not raise the tray and accept the hawse to be non-central in the bumper cover. Live and learn. 2016 D4 Landmark SDV6 (Euro6), Zanzibar (late run D4)
