Heavy duty dampers / "shock absorbers"

HI Guys

For those of you that have fitted the long range tank, rear wheel carrier, and all the extra stuff, and are tired of the bouncing and bottoming out, there is now a solution.

A clever chap by the name of Spyros (in Greece) has developed a set of heavy duty dampers that can be fitted to improve the overall roadholding, and load carrying capability of the D3.

Have a look at the following post, and check out the gallery for some fairly educational pics:

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic16567.html

I don't want to post the price, seeing as I got into Censored when I posted pricing of a make of rear wheel carrier that will not be mentioned again, so PM me if you want more details, or email the chap yourself. Suffice to say they are not cheap, but hey, they are probably worth it

I will be ordering a set, so if anyone wants to share the shipping costs, please PM me and we can chat.

Forgive my ignorance . While I understand that heavier shocks will reduce bouncing (more damping) surely they will not stop bottoming out as this is a function of the spring or in this case the airbag ?

That's the issue that I have heine. She bounces more than she should, with ome resultant bottoming out on fast dips.

I've noticed it more lately, but I have done 112,000km now and about 40% of that is over corrugated gravel roads (and I've added a bit of permanment weight over the original car). Maybe the oe dampers have come to the end of their life? I don't know, but I'd like a firmer damping rate.

It's a pity LR didn't provide the car with adjustable dampers.
 Have a nice day!

OK makes sense . The more damping - the less movement - the less movement the less chance of bottoming out Thumbs Up

Spiros just phoned, and the dampers will be on the way next Friday! Thumbs Up

I have arranged to have them fitted by my favourite LR mechanics (who shall not be mentoned yet) and will report back once they are in. Test drives by arrangement - he with the most Peroni or Captain Moron gets the first go.

For interest - Spiros also convinced me to buy a set of rubber bushes for the lower control arms to ensure we get no more knocking on the rocks.

tempting option, 10, I must say Smile, but I think a ticket from LHR - JNB is about R8k these days, probly more if you buy it from your side. Seeing as the shocks were fairly expensive, I need to save my money for the ipod integration for Mrs. baben. Locally they are around R5k

I'm on the verge of getting some, Baben. I'm eagerly awaiting your report once you've fitted them.

It's got to the stage where when I drive over the kerb at the end of my driveway, the d3 rocks side to side about three or four times before settling down. I'm starting to get seasick. Shocked

I know, I am the same over the 12 thousand speed humps I have to traverse just to get out of my freakin' neighbourhood, but those shocks are now paid for, so hope to see them leave Greece this week Smile Smile Smile

They're in!

OK, so my favourite LR Stealer did the installation, and charged me a fair rate to do it too. It wasn't cheap but I know what the installation involves, and its not easy. (here's a plug for Stephen and Nico - for LR staff you guys are allright!) and I have driven the vehicle home, ie. over about 12 speed humps, some of which are vicious, and I had to go round the block a couple of times to do some speedhumps again. Twisted Evil
Bear in mind I have the STT's fitted, roofrack on, with tent, drawer system installed, rear wheel carrier, plus long range fuel tank (half full by now). There is absolutely no wallowing, no bouncing over bumps & humps, no swaying. The vehicle feels "light" ie. like it was before the accessories were fitted.

So, to Spyros, a great big Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up !

I will fill in more details as I experience, but due to flat battery, I'm off.

I can recommend these dampers to anyone with the heavy stuff fitted
