Had trouble with my front ones a while back and the tone varied in volume and pace, I'd get erratic beeps (all over the shop) when close to nothing & silence when near to an obstacle. Sometimes they didn't work at all. Pretty consistent in that they didn't work, but the symptoms were totally unpredictable. Really odd. Turned out to be a dodgy connection to the back of one of the sensors.
Before the diagnosis, dealer reckoned it was the numberplate, loose at one end.. double sided tape where a self tap would be my choice.

Funny..., I have noticed that front parking sensors very quiet too. I find it irritating to have turn the audio down to virtually nothing to hear the beeps properly

I'm fairly sure on mine that the audio is turned down automatically when the parking sensors start beeping. MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand

I'll second that - The ICE volume is turned down when the beepers are sounding. Also the indicator "ticking" is silenced when the satnav is talking or the phone is being used. Useless info but it makes me smile My17 Volvo XC90 Inscription

2012MY cars you can adjust the PDC volume with the normal volume control (just turn whilst beeping).
My 2010 D4 does not turn down the stereo for PDC - I am also not aware of having driven a D4 that does (pre 12MY).
