There are so many guys here who drive from the Uk to continental europe, I for one would find it very useful to have a chart/table that gives real world times, distances and recommended routes. I would like to either drive to Italy or Germany this summer, but have no ideal of how long it would take.
SWMBO is not keen on it as she thinks its far too much trouble and not -doable with a toddler onboard.

The furthest I've travelled was from Malta to Austria, which is practically the same distance from London to Austria.
I've done it with 2 dogs on board which, in my opinion, is much more difficult than with a toddler as dogs can't go everywhere (sights, museums etc), accomodation that accept dogs is limited, and leaving them in the car is not something I would consider as they're coated breeds and I was travelling in June so it got pretty hot.
Google maps says 16 hours driving. Took me 4 days, though I stopped to see a couple of sights and detoured a bit to get to some nice places and visit a friend in Italy, as well as give the dogs some running time and potty breaks.
In all, I think I spent more like 20-22 hours actually on the road, though Italian motorways down south were riddled with road works, and ones up north were riddled with traffic. So I think you can say google maps estimates are good, provided the roads are free from traffic.
When I plan with Google maps, I plan 5 hours as a long day, which will take around 8-9 hours when you factor in stopping to eat, stretch, take photos, potty breaks, traffic etc etc.
Obviously everyone is different. Some people get tired driving after 2 hours, some people can last 8 or 10 hours. 5 hours is just about right for me  Dennis

Travel over night should make it easier on the children, just more painful for the driver and we always try make toilet break fit in with fuel stops......
how does SWMBO take for driving over night or long routes?
you can plan an early start 2am-3am so they sleep the first part and able to look on the later stages and a stop for breakfast early lunch..... Experience is a difficult teacher, because she gives the test first and then the lesson afterwards!!!!

When travelling in Europe with the caravan on tow, which I have done for over 30 years, I find that an average of 40mph is not far wrong. Obviously not accurate but I plan all my trips round that surmise.

We have driven from here (Somerset) to Portugal 4 or 5 times.
With defenders 90 and wife 7 months pregnant to last christmas with disco 3 and 2 children daughter 3 years old and boy 10months old.
Never had any problems.
Give it plenty of time and you will have no problem.
We normally sleep overnight halfway.
Its the best way to travel...(for me)

we drove from cornwall to far east germany years ago in very wet weather only stoped for fuel and pee took 28 hours ,and i was in the back of escort van , never again  -------------------------------------------------
if you cant hold on dont let go , it ill come in handy for something even if you never use it.

got there about 3 on a monday morning ,started work 7 in morning ,and worked 72 hours a week for 6 months , didnt want to come back to uk because of back of van but the money 20 years ago was great. -------------------------------------------------

With 2 drivers I have taken the tin tent from Staffordshire (via Eurotunnel) to Barcelona in 22 hours door to door, non-stop and Interlaken (Switzerland) in 18 hours, Marseille in 19 hours, Frankfurt in 11 hours. All at sensible motorway speeds with decent stops for meals / naps etc.
If you avoid Paris, driving long distance in Europe is easy and much better than flying.... especially in a d3/d4
just remember to keep left when you come home
