Exhaust crossover pipe

Hi there just to inform and moan Big Cry

About 2 weeks ago driving back from Mapungubwe I heard noise on higer revs ... took ot to my friends at British 4x4 to sort out ... was with them 2/3 days say no problem some mechanical noise but also the cat might be blocked ?? I suspected exhaust problems so took it ti Dunlop Tyre/Exhaust people in Menlyn Motor City - I use them for tyre sand find them very good Very Happy

They fixed the flexible link and removed cat (replaced with empty box) On Friday I wwent to fetch it and they said the crossover pipe leasks (air) but they can't get to it but tried to patch it ? Sounded OK Friday night THEN Saterday on the way to Rustenburg for SA 4x4 nationals it started sounding like a tracktor Evil or Very Mad Big Cry

So it is back at British to seperate the body from the chassis and fix the $^#$& pipe - GR8 design LR !

While it is off I will have the 168,000 service belt done only on 138,000 now but might as well do it.

Anything else to have a look at now ?

So I can't go to the sea and KKNK noe Big Cry Big Cry trying to orginise another car that the family will fit in...
Tx

Hey Nico

Just had mine replaced by Waterford. Apparently a bitch of a job. The pipe has two bellow sections in it and one of them had blown a hole.

I asked if this could be repaired as a new one costs R 6 k + but once I looked at it ... no this is not repairable. (total bill R 11 500 and vehicle gone for a week)

The crossover pipe is mounted at the extreme back of the engine and is used to balance the exhuast system???

This pipe is a very large piece of equipment and must be replaced if devective and it could result in a fire as there is a wiring loom very close. Read into that what you may.

Good luck

Check your brake pipes whilst you are there. Much easier to replace if corroded with the body off.

FIXED !!

OK So British4x4 did the job ! Very Happy

D3 feels or rather sounds good again.

R12,739.50 later BUT - this included cross-overpipe and all the timing belts for 160k service.... R4.5k labour

I am happy with the price and I now at least know the 160k service big item was done at 140k Thumbs Up

So now for EGR blanking and then a decicion if I should go visit Baben for a tune Mr. Green

Any explanation as to why the pipe developed holes? Other than the normal designed by LR reason? High temp in SA? Can't be corrosion/rust surely not as moist there in comparison with UK?

No real answer...

It is a flex type pipe and movement over time could be the cause ... some bracket not 100% correct will lead to more movement ???

LR Design me thinks Laughing

Maybe more info from other D3 owners ?

Kenya

A friend of mine at the local stealers here said they have had to change so many of these pipes now, that they have got a local pipe manufacturer to start knocking them up without a flexible section in them! Apparently it is a permanent fix for a fraction of the cost of the new replacement part...

You can change them without taking the body off, but it is a bitch, and I guess you have to have fingers like a piano player!
