HOW LONG TO BUILD A DISCOVERY 4?

Hi all, how long does it take Land Rover to build a D4 from start to finish?

regards Andrew.

It is only on the actual rolling line for about 6 hours, I think. Takes the other few days to paint the panels and once it has been put together, test everything at Quality Control.

The problem is, of course, that there is only x number of D4's on the line at any one time, and only y number of D4's that get completed each day. There is only one place in the entire world where they are built! And like all Land Rovers, because they are in fact in high demand, it is now taking anything up to six months for an order to go through, from the moment a dealer signs on off on the electronic ordering system through to customer taking delivery!

In a perfect world, they would only be putting together RHD versions of the Discovery at Solihull, with separate LHD plants somewhere on the American continent, and another somewhere on the European continent, that way delivery times would be back to something like 6 weeks.

When we did the factory tour I remember them saying that you can build one 'in a shift' which I always thought meant within 12 hours ?

When you see them been built there isn't much to it really Whistle

If you get the chance, do go on the factory tour. Its genuinely excellent. To see the huge pressing plant in operation is awesome, then to watch the robots assemble the body, and see the way the body is mated to the chassis in seconds. You will not forget it.

The impression that only a few vehicles trundle off the line does not fit with what you see at the factory and when you appreciate that they build 650 cars across the LR model range in Solihull and Halewood each day Smile

Would be great if a "Disco3 / 4 forum" factory visit could be done.
I'll have my name down please ....

Come on guys, it only takes a phone call to LR Experience at Solihull.

Get some available dates for group bookings from them, then negotiate a price (the basic tour was great). Get a contact name and setup a booking reference or password with them.

Then create a sign up on here and get people who want to go to phone LRE direct and book and pay using the prearranged reference or password.

All you need to do then is keep in touch with your contact to make sure those that are signed up have paid.

Then just turn up on the arranged date and take all the glory Laughing

I would do it all myself, but am too busy with work at the moment. Ideally, it needs someone who doesn't work anymore Whistle

I'm way too busy avoiding being way too busy!! Besides my organisational skills are as good as my navigation skills in the desert. As MrH, TFC, Rescue02 and bcb will testify, they are pretty dire. Besides I might get you all signed up for a BMW tour. Laughing Laughing
