Wiring of 12 volt water pump.
I have had to replace the Shurflo water pump in my caravan. A perfectly straight forward job so I thought. Old pump out, new pump in. However when undoing the (household type) connectors there was a "U" shaped wire link looped between wires i.e. black and red. The link has a little black cylinder in the middle. The cylinder has a small silver mark at one end, but I have no idea what it is. It came out with the two wires and I have no idea which way to put it back. Is there a flow direction that is important? I suspect that it is there to supress radio intereference from the pump. Any help please.l

Thanks Wiggs. Is there a right or wrong way to replace the Diode if that is what it is?

Is the silver mark a ring around the entire circumference of the component? If it is a diode then this denotes the cathode (-ve) and if you were to connect this side to the negative supply and the other to positive then you'd get current flow and therefore a dead short (i.e. not what you want). That's if it's wired in parallel across the connections. If it was in series that would be different... could you post a picture of said component?

Basic info for you
The most common function of a diode is to allow an electric current to pass in one direction (called the diode's forward direction), while blocking current in the opposite direction (the reverse direction). Thus, the diode can be thought of as an electronic version of a check valve.
As said a piccy would help G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Yes there is a silver ring completely around the diode. All I can add is that there are 2 wires +ve and -ve to the domestic type connectors and then 2 wires running to the pump. Also +ve and -ve. I have wired up without the diode and the pump runs fine. I have absolutely no idea how to post a picture on the site. Is the anyway I can test the flow through the diode. I did speak to the caravan manufacturer but the compamy has changed hands and they no longer fit the diode.
On the black body of the diode are the letters 1N5401 and underneath G04:

The letters do show it as a diode ..
It should only flow voltage one way .. So quite easy to test .G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

The diode goes silver strip to the positive side of the wire and the other side of the wire so links over to your earth side this will be at the connector end where it plugs into the pump its a way of dumping voltage quicker when you turn the pump off but will work fine without it fitted
