18inch Wrangler ATR Replacement Tyres (Rating Legality) |
|
Guys,
I have just started hunting around for some ATR tyres for my 2.7 SE D4, as the Wranglers are showing thier age.
There are a number of options on the market, Mickey Thompson, Cooper etc. that will fit, however they all have a lower load index (110) than the Wrangler (112).
The tyre fitter is not happy about fitting the lower rated tyres as it could make the car illegal and cause issues with insurance. The ratings are also shown on the drivers door.
Just for referance.
Checking the user manual winter tyres are allowed with a lower rating of 109.
Can anyone help with this one
Thanks

If you look at the tyre placard you will find it says min 109. So they will be ok. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I just went out and checked the placard, Photo can be found here http://www.disco4.com/gallery/displayimage...&pos=0
Don't know if it has changed on the D4 but it does state 18 inch 112
Bit of a pain as the 20inch only require 109
And I'm interested in some Micky Thompsons Discovery 4 2.7 SE

Pity as that was the way you could check with the D3. But I suppose if the manual says 109 winter tyres that would make it legal. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

That's my hope, just wish landrover had put that on the plate too (Winter/ATR Tyres) then there would be no issues with the police (who I have checked with) and insurance.
I have also sent an email to landrover themselves to see if they can shead some light.
What will be interesting is that I am off-roading (not too hardcore) in a couple of weeks with the worn tyres, so will be good to see how they cope. Discovery 4 2.7 SE

What did the insurance say? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Rich,
I have now and the rating is spot on so they are an option.
However just spoke to my insurance company. I'm not insured for being off-road, only roads marked on a map, but excludes unsealed roads in national parks.
Looks like I'll be looking for a new insurance company now too! Discovery 4 2.7 SE

Very common condition on insurance especially with lease companies. GIO were good with my off road claim. I think NRMA are not limited to gazeted roads as well. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I cannot find any local General Tire Suppliers, but have checked the Coopers site.
They list 265/60/R18 as a valid tyre. Even though its specs are 110.
Think I will not bother about the rating like all the other D3 D4 drivers out there. Discovery 4 2.7 SE

Jax Tyres, or just call a local tyre place and ask.

I'm equally confused by this. The weight of the vehicle is pretty well fixed even if it differs slightly by spec.
So why can you have 109 on 19ich rims and need 112 on 18 inch? Also why is the rating for the UK and Australia different?
None of it makes sense.

I think the issue has been cleared up a little bit. See http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/144090...plain.html
Even Coopers Australia phone me and confirmed that the 264/60R18 110 tyres are legal because the load rating is greater than or equal to the lowest rating listed regardless of rim size. Discovery 4 2.7 SE

No suppliers in SA so gave Jax Tyres a call to get a price, and I should be in Victoria (Great Ocean Road) over Easter. They work out around $90 less than the Cooper AT3's.
Funny thing is that I thought that the standard Wranglers would not be that capable off road. However as my brothe in-law is over we decided to take him off road today. We got up all the climbs and descents without any issue. Front diff did lock on some of the rock sections and we even had a group of LC owners watching us climb one of the hills. They could not believe how easy the car did it. All on almost worn out stock tyres.
Saying that it was bone dry, think things would have been different if we had had some rain.
SO I think I have decided to go with the Coopers 285/60R18's when I have saved up a little more.
Thanks for your help Discovery 4 2.7 SE
