Upgrading rims, 18's or 19's

Hi guys, I currently have the 17'' rims on my 57 GS. I was considering looking for some bigger OEM rims to improve my tyre choice. Did a couple of quick searches for comparison, 6 tyres available for 17's and 20 each for 18's and 19's, so quite some difference in the amount available.

But the burning question is which are better, 18's or 19's? I want to keep the ride as smooth as possible as we have very rough roads.

Many thanks

Martin

On what you say about your roads I would stick with 17", there are a few other options available.

Agreed, rough roads = 17s. My choice for driving around rural Surrey when first moved souff, their roads are shocking!! Shocked Shocked Laughing

Interesting... I'm on 18"s, but looking to replace my aged AT2s... Do you reckon you really notice much difference going down to a 17 for bumpy rural roads? Clearly i wouldn't be abe to take corners the same!

Went from 18" summer tyres to 17" ATs for the winter.

Much better ride. I can't imagine how awful 20" + must be - save for recently driving an RRS and thinking how harsh the ride was.

I will buy another set of 17" wheels & new summer tyres when the current ones need to be changed.

You used to be able to get delivery mileage take off 17" wheel & tyres for £50 each, or much less if the dealer was running out of room. Base of the food chain so peeps wanted to put on bigger wheels, happy days for me!! Mr. Green Mr. Green Then LR facelifted the D3 and, after the limited number of 2.7 commercials, that route dried up. Big Cry Big Cry Best I achieved was £165 for 4 brand new wheels & tyres, less than the cost of a single tyre.

You forgot Del, you sold them all anyway. I agree the 17s are far better for normal use, a little Shocked on fast corners.

I've got the V8 brake discs, so 18" is the smallest diameter rim I can use. Worth noting if you think you might do a brake upgrade in the future (for Brembo's you'll need 19" rims)

Having driven over 100k miles on 19" rims, I much prefer the ride of the 18" rims with Pirelli ATR tyres.
