Tinted Windows - Can I modify?

I have got tinted windows but they are not as dark as my previous ones.

Can I get them darker ?

I want them a lot darker for the summer but not sure if you can remove what is there and put darker ones on or do you just stick new ones on top?

If they are factory fitted just have them put on the top, have it done professionally, don't attempt DIY.

As far as I know they are factory fit - at least that is what the dealer told me when I bought it.

Would never attempt DIY so will probably book it in to LR for when I get my warranty stuff booked in

Some insurers see film as a 'modification' so may be worth checking with them as well (depends on yours attitude to risk I guess lol)

This isn't a job for LR main dealer, they will only contract it out, you need a specialist tinter, do a Google or Yell.co searce, it is not an expensive job £250ish.
It dosn't concern the insurance company so long as tou do not touch any glass forward of the A pillar.

My insurers did the same on my previous Disco. The increase was so much I took them off.
And no I'm not a young driver Very Happy
Think it depends on the underwriter.

3 of my last 4 insurers have loaded the premium for tinted windows - albeit not by much.

There is a school of thought that if you have a film applied for say £200, then that is worth declaring. But is it? Your insurer would have to prove that the 'modification' had a material part in any claim. ie. did the insured event happen or was the event worse because of the modification? For tints to the rear of the B pillar, this is unlikely.

In the event of a total loss, the insurer would only need to pay out or replace the spec in the schedule of insurance.... so you would just get another car without tints and need to pay out of your pocket to replace, if you wanted to. Not a big deal.

You can also easily tell the difference between factory fit and aftermarket tints. Factory fit is tinted glass (the tint is in the glass, not a film applied to the surface). As a result, if you look carefully around the edge of window openings, factory fit tints are a consistent shade - aftermarket films have a 'halo' where the film ends and the glass goes behind trim.

Don't go to a LR dealer for it, like M3DPO states, they just sub contract it so you end up paying the dealers cut... In regards to the insurance, explain its for security reasons, some accept this and don't adjust the premium... It does depend on the insurer though... Worth a try..

If they are factory fitted its classed as original so going darker so it shouldn't affect the premium...
If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

Zapp79 suggests that the insurer would have to prove that the 'modification' had a material part in any claim.

With respect I think that this is not correct - they could refuse a claim on the basis of non-disclosure of a modification - play safe & tell them everything.

Thumbs Up
Even if you got factory fitted privacy glass as an optional extra, you still need to notify them about that.
Shouldn't affect the premium though.

TBH I always chicken out and declare everything! Laughing

The insurer certainly would have to demonstrate that the modification had some bearing on the insured event - but that would probably follow their initial rejection of the claim and may have to be argued in court.

You may however find yourself in material breach of contract for failing to disclose a relevant fact.

As I said, there is a school of thought that you could go that way. Personally, I wouldn't bother. Wink
