I work in the insurance and finance industry as a troubleshooter, specialising in complaint processes and regulation, so get to hear the odd apocryphal tale from time to time. Hastings Direct haven't always had the best reputation for claims handling. I know of instances where they have attempted to get out of paying out because they felt the claim was lodged too late (3 months) where no such limitation is possible in law and where in at least once case the claim was actually notified promptly but lost in their admin.

As with all things, you get what you pay for. There is value to be had in shopping around, but in this case you may find you get cover that satisfies the legal definition of insurance but not necessarily the customer's definition when it comes to claiming.

Just renewing my 2006 TDV6 HSE, £234 from Privilege is the best so far by a long chalk.

Del, you may want to check the T&Cs. Privilege have huge excesses and their headline quotes always include further voluntary excesses. They also skimp on what I consider to be very necessary extras on their headline numbers

I'm 38, live in a low risk postcode, have a clean licence, have a low-risk occupation and 8 years no claims. Their headline quote for me was £360 and on first reading it appeared to have a £250 excess. When you check, it is actually a £250 voluntary excess, with a compulsory excess of £400, bringing the total excess to £650! If you remove the voluntary excess so you only pay the first £400 ("only" being somewhat subjective) the quote rises to £430. Add in protected no claims and a guaranteed hire car and it rises to £520. My existing insurer covers me for all of these things with a £250 compulsory and no voluntary excess for £470.

Suddenly the original quote from Privilege is not such great value for money.

I tend to look at what cover you actually get for your money and am happy to pay a bit more than the cheapest quote to get cover that will be an asset in the event of making a claim. If you are happy to go with the cheapest cover, be aware that it may prove more expensive if you do have an accident.

Will have a look at the excesses now. Thanks.

Just had a look. With £250 Voluntary Excess there is an additional £150 Compulsory Excess so no as bad as I thought!

Voluntary Excess £0 then total excesses are £150, cost of policy is £286
Voluntary Excess £150 then total excesses are £300, cost of policy is £244
Voluntary Excess £250 then total excesses are £400, cost of policy is £234

I highly rate the cover offered by Liverpool Victoria. Not the cheapest, but very high level of cover and recommended by pretty much every independent study into motor insurance in the last couple of years. If you want the cheapest they may not appear to tick the box, but they are usually reasonably competitive with high levels of cover.

I must declare a limited interest as LV are a current client of mine. I've been working with them on and off for the last couple of years reviewing their processes and interactions with their third party service providers as well as helping project manage a new complaint management software rollout. They aren't perfect, but I've yet to find an insurer that is. Where they do win is on the level of cover provided.

Things to check with any insurer are:

Compulsory Excess
Voluntary Excess
Hire Care terms (length of hire, level of hire car)
Is legal expenses cover needed/included?
Protected No Claims needed/included?

Hope this helps.

Mine's only ever used on Greenlanes Wink

If it gets damaged at somewhere like Boughrood it was actually on a nearby greenlane Wink Wink

LV= depends on whether you are dealing with the group, the Life and Investment side, the bank or the general insurance division. Rebrand only applies to General (house and motor) at present. Rolling Eyes
