Disc Guard issues

Hello all,
On the weekend i went driving up the Blue Mountains to Lost City, Glow Worm Tunnels, Blackfellows Hand Trail and Newnes.

When i crossed the river at Newnes and through some sand I had a scraping noise in the front. I got out and tapped the front right disc guard from where the noise appeared to be coming from with a big stick to knock any crap(sand, rocks) out of it. The sound went away.
When crossing back over the river the same thing happened but this time i couldn't get it out. It appeared like a stone and was changing scrapping sounds as i drove back and forth trying to release it. (scrap, scrap, clunk, rub noises).
I drove back through some water trying to make sure there wasnt any sand in the front discs.
Finally after alot of fussing and banging of the disc guard and driving forwards backwards it dissappered.

This has happened to me before down at Snowy mountains about a year ago when driving down dirt roads and i thought the disc guard was scraping due to being hit and bent but wasn't sure.

Has anyone else had this problem?
Is there a known issue with the strength of the disc guards?

Or is it a design fault where there is an opening in the top of the disc guard to try and guide the air into the discs keeping them cool that seems to act like a scoop for rocks and crap?

It's very embarrasing driving along past people with massive scraping noises.... Big Cry

Had a similar problem . loud scrapping noise from the front right wheel .

one of the wheel balancing weights had gotten loose from the wheel and had gone and jammed itself between the gaurd and disc brake .

Took over two hours to figure out the problem !!

I've checked and its definitely not a mag weight.

Anyone else had this before?

It seems very common for small stones to get stuck in there. The advice I had from a LRE instructor was to stick it in reverse and accelerate hard for 20m, go forward and repeat until the stone drops out.

On one occasion, it took about 20 goes and I felt very sick, but it's usually just one or two.

I've had the same problem. Easy fix, just irritating.

Thanks guys. Yeah I have tried the reversing thing so many times and it seems to end up going away. But just feel like an idiot when I drive past other 4wd owners with a loud scraping noise and then have to drive forward and reverse 20 times to free it up. Big Cry
I have also had to bang the disc guard with the tyre spanner before to remove the rock.
Seems like a crappy design as. Have not seen any of my mates in Japanese 4wds have this issue.

Can happen on all vehicles depends on the size and percentage of stones in the water. It will happen to the jap ones elsewhere.

Had to help a mate remove his rear left wheel and caliper to remove a small stick stuck in the internal hand brake drum. Amazing that such a little stick could make so much noise.
Tried to forward and backward movement with no joy.
Anyway, it was an easy fix....10 mins all up.
