TOWBAR NOT SUITABLE FOR OFF ROAD

Has eneyone ever seen such useless towbar for off road! It is far to low to tow an off road trailer.
I have contemplated cuting and welding it up higher but see too many structural problems there.
As a tempre measure to tow either off road trailer, boat, car trailer , I have
made a high tounge to fit, this I am not happy with.
My present thinking is cutting the recever off flush, leaving the centre part in the back crossmember then fabricating a new conventional tow bar that is
up high for offroad. My local LR dealer told me the towbar supplyed was that way so as not to set off the rear park sensors, NOT SO , I dummied up a mock tow hitch in the place I wonted it and GUESS WHAT, it did not set it off.
Any coments on this thing that was designed by a Irish commety! Exclamation

I would say it was designed for English caravanners, so I'm not surprised it isn't any use Rolling Eyes

There are tow hitches available. I think PCH has one. PM him and see if he can help.

The standard removeable towbar is definitely not fit for offroad use. I tried it with my trailer and it works great as a plough. Must take 10 degrees off your departure angle. See my gallery for examples

I would be very interested to hear about a better option, if it is removeable and gives the right height for offroading.

Penguin has a great towbar setup, but it's based on the multi-height bar which is kind of a semi-permanent fixture, so wouldn't work for me

He he he, whoops.

Bit Aggressive.

Um, well, Um.

Tally Ho, and all that. Embarassed

Unfortunately I haven't had a good experience with them............. nor any other NSW/ACT/QLD dealers, for that matter.

I'd appreciate a PM from any Sydney based Aussies, who have had a good experience. Smile

Are we talking about the a) the LR supplied little cast abortion that clips in under the car and buts up to the spare tyre or b) the LR supplied hitch and ball that slots into it or c) the total package.

The solution to a) I would have thought would require significant re-engineering to the back bumper/chassis to relocate and install a conventional 2" receiver a la Hayman Reese. Kaymar obviously haven't touched it with the new bumper for the swing away carriers - so it ain't easy!

b) is easily done if your issue is that you need to get a higher ball/hitch for your camper. A decent towbar place should be abe to supply an adjustable head unit to get that extra height. I have an adjustable head unit that gives me 510 mm maximum at ball for my camper and is rated at 250/2500kg, over this load rating will be a problem.

The hitch itself does not activate the PDC but with the Treg Receiver installed it does.

Baben,

is that with the air suspension set to offroad or normal ride height ?

LITTLE CAST ABORTION THAT LR TRY PASS OF AS TOW BAR

Yes I mean the little cast abortion,
I have an adjustable tow hitch to fit as a tempre measure, this is only ok for good roads as it has to stick out so far.
With enough heads thinking this through a answer will come up Question

what about the 2" receiver hitch?
that seems to sit far enough inboard so as not to reduce the exit angle

2"Receaver hitch

I mean the little cast receiver hitch that hangs so low that it could be used to catch a plane on a aircraft carrier
