Woodman must be a fan of 'Bling'. Doesn't look like his D3 will be venturing far off the tarmac

ill use the LR car i think on the complimentary off road day!!

They may be a bit "bling", but they seriously make a difference to the handling - which was quite a surprise!

You guys go off road - ill hold the video camera!!

woodman438, believe me, nothing will make a 2.7tonne vehicle good at speed or road holding on public roads. Before you buy take a look at the testing certificate for the wheels from the manufacturer. Some of the 'skinny' wheels can buckle like a cycle wheel with hard cornering. If they do not have a certificate, please don't touch them for your own and others safety. Also check with your insurance company it could make a huge difference.

Many of us are looking for off road wheels, they are about and they are Italian and alloy, but they are not that good and we don't mention them. We want steels, which are much more robust.

Woodman thanks for the wheels, it won't be long before they get very muddy.

As discussed if you want to check how your knew Kahn Wheels compare to your original 19" you can go to this website. At least you will be able to check whether you can keep the spare.

good to meet you simon - thanks for the link too

re the wheels - obviously my new wheels are not for off road use, i realise that - and whilst i would love to drive offroad i think that the enitre value and package of the car would deter me from going off road! i mean the price, potential damage to car, paintwork, etc....

With that in mind - if i do fancy going off road - give me classic, cheap defender - that way if something were to happen it wouldnt hurt the financials so bad! I have a friend who i class as a very good off road driver, been doing it for years - but still didnt stop him rolling his girlfriends defender! Ill think twice before risking my new car, but obviously thats just me and not against what anybody else wants to do!

I had read some comments about aftermarket wheels, but Kahn claim on their website that they have been manufactured to the required standards re weight, brake caliper clipping, etc... They are stamped up as made in Italy too - is that good or bad?

Admittidley i havent seen any certificate for the wheels - i will chase that.

Re insurance - my ins company have charged me an extra £90 to cover the wheels

If anyone can shed any "facts" on the kahn wheels i would be interested to hear

Thanks all for all your comments - i learn from this board everyday!!!

(ps - martin maybe this thread should be moved if disucssion continues!)

woodman438, many wheels are made in Italy and are OK. They normally are copies of originals. With the weight of the D3, be careful that is all. I take your point about not going off road, which is fine, but it is a lot of weight when the car is in action, especially during braking and on bends.

The insurance companies are only charging you for the loss value, not anything else. Ensure you are covered for more than the loss of the wheels please.

Khan, must have some sort of documentation as to stress and tollerance for the wheels.

I hate to be a killjoy, but I have made road (and off road) safety my life and the correct equipment to me is vital.

Take for instance cycle carriers on the back of cars. These totally destroy the billions of pounds (dollars) spent of crash safety, yet we fit them for our convenience and pleasure. I actually saw a 10 year of girl walk by the rear of a car with one fitted and the cycles taken off. As she did she caught one of the hooks and it completely took her eye out. They are still not illegal, they should be. Wheels are no different.

so, bit of an update -

spoke to kahn, the only thing they have is what is on their website, which is:

i have also been told by a number of sources that kahn do know what they are doing regarding wheels and these are specialist of the disco3 rather than just bog standard 22" wheels

i also have a good friend who runs a tyre business and also confirms kahn are a reputable make of wheel.

so all in all, i understand i have an aftermarket product on my vehicle - i have made all the checks possible and believe them to be the safest aftermarket wheel i could have purchased.

oh and yeah - bike racks are dangerous - by a LR3 and put them in the back!

Now you have data that helps, which is what safety and peace of mind is all about.

BN, thanks for your help! I presume that all that testing stuff is the important bit - not being farmilar with the regulations and standards of testing i hope i get the all clear now! (god, sounds like i am talking to a doctor!)

10forcash: Re the road angel install, dead easy really -pics are boring cause all the wiring is hidden. Basically it sits above the centre speaker using the windscreen mount. Wiring goes behind the dash towards the passenger, down the A pillar - behind the dash between the gloveboxes and then power is tapped off the 12v switched bus circuit so that the road angel starts up when i unlock the doors thus when i get in the sat signal is locked on and we are ready to go! Also the cool bit is that it stays on for 60 secs when you get out and lock it and blue lights always look very cool at night!
