Should I get an extended warranty on a 2005 Disco 3?

Hi all,

First of all, what a well-informed and helpful forum! I've been reading through many of the threads since last week in preparation for the purchase of my Discovery 3.

I finally took the plunge a few days ago - it's a 2005 Discovery 3 SE in Java black/Alpaca with 1 previous owner and FSH (I paid 13k, if anyone wants to comment on whether I paid a reasonable price for it or not?!).

It's a lovely car - 57,000 miles, air compressor, and EPB recently changed, so I don't expect any problems. However, having read the scare stories on here and elsewhere (honestjohn etc) I am concerned about potential repair costs and want to take out a warranty for peace of mind.

Warranty Direct have quoted £500 for their premium cover (which would cover the EPB) and I can have it serviced at an Independent (they wanted £580 for Franchise dealer, but then you have to get it serviced there too). Can anyone give me any advice on this or perhaps experiences with warranty etc?

Finally, I was advised that the cambelt should be changed at around 105k miles or 7 years - as mine is 7 years old, it is due, but having had Jaguars in the past, this does seem a little premature and excessive to me, especially as the car has not been off road. Should I get it done?

If you do get a warranty and don't change the cam belts don't expect them to pay out if it lets go. Not changing your cambelts would be at your risk but the consequences of the main belt going are a new engine, not cheap if you can even get one. Saves yer money & takes yer chance. Thumbs Up

Welcome - I'm sure you will enjoy the car.

Search the forum, I am sure you will find that we all agree that the 7year/105k mile service & belt change should be done when scheduled. many of us opt to do it earlier in view of the cost of failure.

You may consider replacing the water pump at the same time, and certainly all minor related components like idle rollers.

Do the 105K/7Year, don't take the chance.

It is not the mileage or the way the car has been driven,
it's the age of the belts that play a part too.

It's also on the Land Rover service schedule that when the car
reaches 105.000 miles or in your case becomes 7 years old, this is due.

If you decide against a service interval that changes these belts
and one should break, I am pretty sure you can forget about your warranty also.

When you say premium cover, do you mean extra care cover ? I was quoted £500 ish for mine and we have similar aged vehicles. Most things are covered but would seriously suggest getting your belts done. in my oppinion not worth the risk !

Yep, but as I didnt come out of any other warranty or just had a main dealer service i have to wait 90 days for the wear and tear to start. I have opted to use my local indy as i think they might be a bit better dealing with WD regarding issues etc. I have up to £60 an hour (i assume plus vat on top)

I bought a 2008 LR3 with 80k kms in Canada in Nov 2010 for around $32000 all inclusive of tax. Paid $2k CAD for 2 years of complete coverage of everything as long as I did regular oil changes and regular maintenance. And they said if I don't use this within first 2 years I can pay $200 CAD to extend for another 2 years in november 2012. My dad took it anyway because of "peace of mind" and I have had some common issues with the car which have been common with everyone like the hood latch sensor playing up and the fog light wiring both of which I easily fixed myself. So this November I'll pay the extra $200 for another 2 year of "peace of mind" warranty. Hope nothing goes wrong cos I love this car but you never know.
