A friend of mine is on the brink of getting rid of his TD5 90, as it repeatedly loses all electrical power for no apparant reason. Battery has been checked, and apparantley the garage he went to could not help...
i will try to get more details but if anyone knows a) the possible root of the problem (i know i havent given much detail, but thats all i know so far... will try to learn more) or more likely b) a decent LR mechanic in the yeovil area of Somerset
(apologies if slightly off topic) D3 TDV8 HSE on order, Should Arrive 2017. If i'm lucky.

Karl,
There are a couple of outfits in Yeovil - Bickleigh's is the one I'd tip. It's about 1/4 mile on from Yeovil LR in the same I.E. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

was a suspision of mine... i have not had much chance to interrogate fully, but he did say he had taken it to a garage, who said they didn't know what was wrong, i assume any mechanic worth talking to would have checked that. D3 TDV8 HSE on order, Should Arrive 2017. If i'm lucky.

Bad earth wouldn't cause the battery to discharge,
firstly, check the charge rate under load (headlights on) and @1500 rpm, with a battery that is in good condition, you should get 13.6-14.2VDC
Check for volt drop with engine running, batt. -ve to engine should be 0V as should batt. +ve to alternator +ve output stud (can also be indicated by the charge light glowing slightly under load)
If all OK, check that the battery warning light is extinguished with the engine off & keys out and illuminates with IGN on but engine not started (AUX diodes in alternator rectifier pack faulty)
Finally, check for volt drop by connecting a 12V lamp between the battery -ve terminal and the -ve lead any current draw will illuminate the lamp, but don't forget to disconnect any alarm fitted. eliminating volt drop can be best acheived by pulling fuses one at a time until the lamp goes out, then investigate all connected equipment to that circuit - have fun!

I took "repeatedly loses all electrical power " to mean, everything cuts out The End

having just spoken in more detail to said friend, the story has completely changed!
it is actually his headlights that cut out, either they do not turn, on or they turn off during driving. also, a few times the alarm has sounded when he has turned the headlights on.
(i know this is a totally different scenario to the one described above... i have told him to be more clear in future!) D3 TDV8 HSE on order, Should Arrive 2017. If i'm lucky.

dont worry TFC, seeing as the first post is completely irrelevant now...
it took a while to determine that what my friend thought was a loss of power was in fact a loss of lights (Front and Rear) D3 TDV8 HSE on order, Should Arrive 2017. If i'm lucky.

I always wondered what kept the seats warm Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?
