I thought the black ones were the early ones that had the rust problem, which is why from mid 2005 they now silver?

Thats what I thought too. On my first D3 they were all replaced with silver ones due to this problem.

Mine ain't rusty at all and they have had some stick. In fact they have been protected by mud for the last 2 years and are in absolutely perfect condition. They must have had extra black applied to them at the time of manufacture. Thinking about it they must be very very very rare.
