Suspension Air bag replacement |
|
Took my 05 HSE 110,000ml to indie yesterday after having suspension warning light/normal height only fault coming on, more frequently over the last few weeks. I didn't really know what was wrong but expected it to be either a sensor playing up or the compressor on its way out. When I pulled up into workshop and turned off engine the mechanic bought my attention to a hissing noise coming from n/s front wheel arch. He immediately inspected it armed with torch and I guess a spray gun to check where leak was coming from and decided after a few minutes that air bag needed replacing costing about £350ish inc labour to fix.
I am just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, as I haven't seen it mentioned on here. According to mechanic its quite common on Range Rovers, he did say he hadn't done one on D3 before.
Is it worth getting a second opinion?

As long as he's checked the pipes and voss connectors at the top and they're not leaking, then yes, it's probably the air bag. Bodsys Brake Bible

Going on from your other thread, if the bag itself is leaking I'd expect that corner of the car to drop when the car is parked up. The pressure in the bag doesn't drop when you turn off the ignition, it's stored in the bag holding the car up.
If that corner stays up, then it's probably pipe or valve related, maybe even the air reservoir whose front end is near the corner you heard the hiss from.

The car does lower when turned off but not really obviously on that corner. I think I'm going to have to trust their judgement, not used them before {chichester 4x4 centre), the guy I normally use has moved a bit too far away and sort of preferred easier cars to work on.

Airs bags on D3/4 RRS are pretty bullet proof. You may have a faulty one but I would get them to check the valve blocks first as the failure of these is more common. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Thats why I thought I should mention it, as from what I've read up on it most comments point out that its over engineered/bulletproof. I will give them a call later and mention the valve block.

Will do Chris. When you switch off ignition can you hear air leaking from one of the corners, as that is the symptom I have n/s front.

No i havn't heard a leak but it sinks about an inch after 12hrs (work shift) mainly the front I think.
One day when i locked it and was walking away i thought i heard a release of air from the back end.

Have you had a fault show in message centre with the dreaded bong, I've been having "suspension fault - normal ride height only" more and more frequently for the last month. Now it's on constantly after about 2 mins after starting.

Did he examine the ride height sensor? Much more common problem.... Prince Harry's D3: G4 factory equipped D3 - expo rack, winch, roof lights, ladder, active locking rear diff, RAI, Melville & Moon seat covers, General Grabber ATs/ Goodyear Duratrac

I'm going to have a chat with them in the morning. Not convinced the air bag is the problem. Hopefully one way or another it will be sorted.
To be continued ....

ok took car in this morning as arranged, told the guys in the workshop to double check fault codes, valve block, height sensors etc. Picked car up this afternoon and airbag had been replaced £450. Drove home and everything seems fine, no bongs or faults showing.
Fingers crossed, they were right and problem solved.
