Need a new engine - what else should I have done? |
|
The engine in my 2005 D3 (112,000 miles but with FSH including belts) went bang yesterday - no smoke and still running but sounded like a"bag of spanners". Clearly something seriously wrong.
I got recovered to a main dealer who are saying that something's clearly broken inside the engine. They've suggested that instead of paying them to strip it down I should just have a new engine.
They've quoted £8500 but with various discounts this comes down to £7600 (for a fully recon LR engine). Does this sound about right.
I don't think I've much choice (SHMBO thinks we should just sell it - but I suspect that it's worth more to me than I'd get for it).
So assuming that I'm going to keep it for a few more years, what else should I have done whilst the body is off? Looking through previous posts, the list looks like:
1. Turbocharger (should I just aske them to check this or is a new turbo a good investment?)
2. EGR valves - they are currently blanked (Will a dealer want to re-fit non functioning / blanked EGRs?)
3. Intake manifold (currently missing the butterfly valve)
3. Intercooler hoses
4. Coolant hoses (are these really necessary?)
5. Front & rear timing belts (won't these come with a new engine?)
6. Drive belt (won't this come with a new engine?)
It's also been suggested that the brake piipes should be replaced whilst the body is off. This seems a bit extreme?
Is there anything else I should have done or ask the Dealer about?
Many thanks
Paul

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear that. Is it not just better to sell yours as is and by another? However, I know what you men about value to youbvs financial value.
Out of interest you didn't happen to have a look at the front belt pulley and see if it had sheared? My car Iisthe same age and mileage so feeling twitchy.

Whilst waiting for the AA I had a quick look at the stuff you can see (which of course isn't much). The front belt was still in place - of course the rear belt you can't see.

Get the turbo actuator link changed and all turbo/intercooler hoses changed. Bad luck it's gone, worth finding out what's happened to it though, even if it's just academic, though not worth throwing more money at it.
BTW have you just had your cam belts done?

All the belts were done at 95,000 mile - I wanted to be better safe than sorry - not that it worked!

As DSL says, turbo actuator rod should be changed while the turbo is accessible.
Front timing belt will come with a re-con engine.
Rear belt + tensioner can be swapped over, and re-used, but advisable to change it
Brake pipes are a doddle with the body off, and should only take a couple of hours.
Advise clutch if its a manual, or g/box filter + oil if its an auto
Its not uncommon to find a few cracked body mounts at this point too.
Get them to check the rear upper wishbones before removing the body. Piece of with the body off...
Probably rear ARB bushes/shims. A 30 second job to
A general checkover of the wiring looms etc, making sure there is no evidence of chaffing/corroded wires etc My D3 Build Thread

17k miles after belts changed would hopefully rule out a problem with that. You did the right thing, I had mine changed at 82k miles coz the body was off for a turbo change.

Okay, thanks guys. Looks like I'll have to explain to SWMBO, why a £7600 engine change is now going to cost quite a bit more!

I went down the second hand engine route at an Indy, a whole lot cheaper and you can get a second hand engine quite reasonably, check out breakeryard and eBay, there as even one with 19 miles on when i was looking plus you get AT&T the bits with it do a lot less on labour. A main dealer won't do that though, would need to be an Indy Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Hi JPW
Sorry to hear of your troubles, I agree with DaveT, there must be a good indi near you? Got to be worth looking into, if you go down the dealer route and get everything done prob gonna be £9000! How much is a 05 D3 worth?
Good luck

From memory mine came in at around these figures:
2nd hand engine (69K) from ebay with all accessories on it £2200 delivered to Scotland
Fitting at strathearn, including (buying and fitting) brakes pipes, clutch, release bearing and flywheel, came in around £3400 ish
An indy is about £40 an hour labour compared to a minimum of aout £85 at a dealer after discounts, I was quoted 22 hours to lift body and remove heads, work it out from there.
CWS are a reputable scrappy near Yeovil, you can sometimes get a bit of discount by saying TLO recommended them, I have used them on several occasions and have always been impressed with quality of parts and service. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

I think you should get a second opinion, i recall somewhere on here where the belt snapped snd LR main dealer said a new engine was the only cure at the same sortoffigures hou've been quoted, however it came down to only snapped rocker bar brackets... Still a biggish job but nowehere near as expensive.... If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works
