Motorway Vibrations

This is my first post on here since buying our Discovery 3 SE a couple of weeks ago.
It's a 2006 auto (55 reg).
I am enjoying the car, but would like to enjoy it more, if only I could stop worrying about it going wrong.
Yesterday, on my way home from work, I was cruising along the motorway at around 65-70ish. Everything seemed fine, until I started to go down a hill and noticed a slight vibration.
At first I thought it was the road, but dismissed this as I use this road every day and have never noticed it before. Then I thought it might be a slightly unbalanced wheel and that changing my speed might make it go away. I slowed down slightly but the vibration continued.
In fact it was rapidly getting worse until the whole car was vibrating.
Luckily I was close to an exit, so turned off. The vibration continued until I had come to a complete stop.
I checked all the wheels and tyres, looked underneath and gave everything a good tug, but couldn't find anything wrong.
I tried driving it again and the vibration had cleared completely. I couldn't get it to come back again at any speed.
So, what on earth could be wrong here? Has anybody else experienced anything similar?

Could be a binding caliper, symptoms fit what you had. Did you check for a hot wheel?

Or it could be the Parking Brake. I had that a few times. Stopping, pushing the handle down and refersing a few meters helped for me till I used the Parking brake again and then It could happen again. Taking the discs off and cleaning and greasing helped to solve the problem.

Thanks for the replies... what a great forum!
Does sound similar to your experience clubber.
I didn't check for a hot wheel, I must admit, however it did smell a bit warm at the back of the car.
I assumed this was because I had just slowed from motorway speeds, but obviously I will have to check each wheel if it happens again.
This looks like a fairly common problem then? Glad to read that it seems like a relatively easy repair!

could be a brake disc. I had similar feeling and no matter what speed i accelerated to or brake to it continued, then it would suddenly disappear as quick as it started.

I replaced the discs and pads as they needed replacing anyway and didnt have the problem again

anything that is getting hot would indicate a binding caliper, binding EPB or wheel bearing. touch the wheel and the disc and see if anyone is hotter than the others

EPB problem, comment issue, it needs stripping down, cleaning snd adjusting, mine did the same, followed Bodsy's brake bible an it never csme back... Lasted in excess of 12000mls... Until i sold the car....
 If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

OK, have had a read of the Brake Bible, so shall tackle the EPB strip and clean over the weekend.
