Noticed whilst driving through France, this December that the screen on the GPS unit would frequently fad a shade or so darker then flick back to the normal colour. Anyone else notice this?

could be due to strong sunlight hitting the light sensor on the dash instruments, Try shining a bright torch on the little white lens (right hand one) in the rev counter and see if you can reproduce it
I had a similar worry but realised it was due to driving in low winter sun (yes, sun!!) with tree cover that cast alternating shadows on the sensor....also managed to affect the auto headlights occasionally.
