Complete Power Loss - Frightening!

This post is on behalf of my Aunt.

She was driving the car (see spec below) yesterday and experienced some difficulties. From what I know, the Discovery seemed to have an engine problem where it lost all power all together. The more frightening of which was turning left onto a very steep hill, putting the foot down as it needs plenty of power and absolutely nothing. The car revved for Britain, but it just stopped under the gradient of the hill. Not a good situation to be in when you're pulling off a busy road and cars are coming at you from behind Shocked . After rolling the car slowly backwards to the side of the road, the car began to operate again as normal. The 2nd frightening occurence was at a main roundabout, where after giving the Land Rover some hard acceleration, all power was lost and it simply revved. Again, not a good situation. On the return journey home, there were about 9 more occurrences of this same problem.

Land Rover Assistance are picking the car up soon and carrying it away, as it's unsuitable to drive.

Just wondering if anybody else has had this same problem? Is it a quick and easy fix, is it common? And it wont happen again... will it? Shocked

Many thanks. CY

Is this power loss, or loss of drive?

if its revving, and not going, thats loss of drive. Is it an auto? was it in gear properly? Maybe the auto selector needs adjusting?

It's the auto. 'box, TDV6. Confused I really couldn't tell you, I'll have to speak to my Aunt again and find out what LR Assistance say. All I do know is that when she put her foot down it did rev and rev but not go.
I have noticed the gearbox to be a bit dodgy in wanting to go into Drive recently, so could be related.
Cheers

Any idea what was showing on the instrument pack as to the gearbox status (N or D etc.) could well be a loose shift cable as detailed in TSB 307-002

Ohh Confused Well spoken to my Aunt, she was in normal 'D' and lost all power under acceleration. In a moment of frenzy, she switched the car off, threw the 'stick into 'P'. Started her up again, into 'D' and foot down like there's no tomorrow - and it worked! Shocked

Well done to 10forcash! It was indeed a problem with the shift cable! Land Rover Assist came out today. The bloke just jumped into the car, started her up, pulled the stick back and said "It's the shift cable" - genius! Very knowledgable guy, he's taken the car off to the dealer and expects to have it returned to us in 2-3 days.
Very Happy Thanks for the help.
