Why would sand mode have this effect on tyres and diff's then JMC?
Because the centre diff is locked up in sand mode which will effectively attempt to keep the vehicle from turning corners
Therefore, when you do make a turn, you are working against the diff causing the tyres to wear more and stressing the diff.
If you had a D1, you pushed the Hi/Lo selector to the left when conditions dictated the requirement for locking the diff. If used on dry tarmac you would soon see what I mean.
But methinks you knew that already DG...........

It also backs off the DSC so dont try any quick cornering. 2.7t will start to understeer pretty quick
Surely neither of the diffs will lock up on tarmac. Tried mine today with 4X4 info up and they both stayed green. I have regularly used mine round town in sand mode since a very nice man from LRA suggested it when I commented about the lag when pulling out (then again he wouldn't have to pay for any repairs to his company D3 , would he Pot Noodle Challenge Winner 2011

Same here... I've been trying out Sand mode all day & neither diffs lock up & both padlocks stay green/unlocked on the 4X4 display; no squealing wheels round corners etc...
Seems to me that it's the perfect non-TC'd option. It also appears to firm up the ride a little, too.
JMC says the centre diff locks up - if that were the case, wouldn't the 4x4 display show the red/locked padlock sign when in Sand mode? If it truly was locked, wouldn't slow/tight cornering (not to mention parking) be nigh on impossible?DGRR
Sand locks the centre diff according to my dealer, so it will give extra wear when cornering.
Look! I wasn't the one who started this
I simply took this info as being correct (since nobody suggested that it was wrong) and then extrapilated the consequences.
I've got a proper TC so I don't care anyway
Makes sense that the centre diff should be locked in sand though

JMC, U any closer to getting Mrs JMC a D3? If so I wouldn't get it TC'd, you'd need the extra speed for the flight part of "fight or flight" that follows the war cry "You did what?"!
I suspect that the diffs are just more 'sensitive' as they are in the other TR modesThe End

Excellent... Sand mode it is, then, for all tarmac use. It'll be interesting to see what effect (if any) there is on fuel consumption. With the greater torque availability, I find I can manually shift up quicker, thus keeping the revs lower, so hoping for a slight reduction in thirst.
The only thing I miss is cruise ctrl disabled in Sand mode. Oh well...DGRR

Don't forget that the D3 records how much time (or miles) is spent in each TR mode, to assist the dealers with diagnosing faults
