paper oil filter removal from plastic oil canister

Dear all,

I have a D4 TDV6 HSE 3 litre diesel. I've had problems removing the paper engine oil filter from its plastic canister during an engine oil change service.

I didn't want to force it and damage the plastic tube like structure within the paper filter.

I've noticed that the company LASER sells an 'oil filter removal tool' about £16 but this is for the 2.7 litre jag/land rover engine oil filter.

The vehicle is low mileage so I've put everything back and replaced the oil only, but will need to replace the oil filter next time.

Any ideas as to how I remove the paper oil filter?

Will this tool do the job? Is it simply a case of pulling the paper filter out of the plastic housing?
The filter:-

Any help appreciated,

Thanks,

Matt

I use a screwdriver or a pair of pliers. It sticks, but its just a case of pulling it straight out. Thumbs Up

Oil filter D4

Thanks for reply.

On the off chance i now decide to replace the oil filter paper element, can I do this with the oil sump full of oil? i.e. the oil filter is at the highest point in the engine, will this be possible or should I just leave it until next year to replace oil filter?

Thanks,

Matt

personally Id be changing the oil filter sooner rather than leaving it for a year.

let the engine drain the oil lower. You will almost certainly have oil in there, but a few rags ready to soak up anything that comes out and you'll be fine. Thumbs Up

Title 3.0 TDV6 Oil Filter Cap Centre Support
Category Engine
Last modified 17-Oct-2012 00:00:00
Symptom 499000 Basic Engine
Content Issue:

The oil filter centre support which is fitted internal to the oil filter cap housing is inadvertently being discarded during a routine Service when the oil filter element is replaced on 3.0 TDV6 engine derivatives.

Action:

After the filter element is replaced please check the oil filter cap housing and ensure the centre support is retained in place before refitting the cap assembly. Failure to ensure the centre support is in place reduces the clamp height of the element which can potentially affect the closure of the internal drain valve. This could lead to an oil leak resulting in excessive exhaust smoke.

For reference the current part number of the oil filter element is LR013148 and the oil filter cover cap part number is LR013147. Please always refer to Microcat for up to date part number information.
