Battery and starting problems - HELP! |
|
Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
2012 D4, 97k miles. It has recently been doing a lot of short journeys, coupled with the FBH being active on the cold mornings we’ve had a low battery warning. Symptoms also include an extended crank/turnover before the engine fires up.
I moved the car off the drive this morning and it started fine. I thought I’d used the last of the power in the battery as when I came to start it again it was just turning over for ages and not firing up.
This escalated to not even turning over, the ingition would power up but then power down when I pressed the starter button.
I tried jump starting off another car and also from my Optimate charger. Even after ages the car wouldn’t even turn over. I briefly saw a message flick up about checking the smart key but I put this down to low battery symptoms.
The battery didn’t seem to be taking charge so I went and bought a new one from the local motor factors. Once changed over I expected the car to just fire up, but it didn’t.
I’m still getting the same symptoms as before I changed the battery. Ignition powers up, foot on brake, press the starter button and it just powers down. I tried this 3/4 times but then got the ‘low battery 3 minute shutdown warning’.
I’m really confused now, it’s a brand new heavy duty battery. I did a bit of searching on here and there were a couple of post relating to a central junction box (CJB) but I haven’t a clue what this is, where it is, or why it would suddenly start causing a problem?
Also if anyone is near S36 postcode and knows these things well then I’ll happily pay for your time to sort it!
Help!
Cheers
Iain

It is possible that even though you have changed the battery the car doesn't recognise the new battery.
Did you install a new battery of the same type that was in there?
If not then you have to update the car's electronics to the new battery. This will require an IID tool or such tool that can update the system.
There are posts on here about changing the battery.

You should put a jump lead from the battery negative to the engine (onto the block somewhere) If it then starts normally, your engine earth cable has snapped.
