Tailgate won't unlock Result
Great news just been out and repaired locked tailgate.
Many thanks to members who pointed me in the right direction with hints and tips.
Not the easiest job to do, but tennis balls were excellent spacers, leaving room for hands and fingers. No blood loss bonus!!
Only real stumbling block was releasing the cable from the actuator box, but on the basis I'd bought a replacement part from Duckworths £30 on my doorstep I resorted to brute force in a confined space but got it off.
The really anoying part is then pulling the end of the cable and the upper tailgate releasing so easily it's such a pain to get too, you'd have thought landrover would have a manual release system somewhere.
Anyway straight forward after that just as it shows on videos and guides.
Reckon I saved myself a couple of hundred quid and took me lees than an hour and a half. with some fairly basic tool.
Thanks Again Dave

Doubt you saved yourself a couple of hundred quid, its only a half hour job or so after you have done them a few times
Its a good feeling when you can fix something yourself though, without having to go to a garage My D3 Build Thread

Isn't there a preventative thing you can do to the tailgate before you have to do the full repair?

Hell No
D3 Tailgate failure is actually a rite of passage into ownership IMHO.
There are many possible fixes and solutions provided on the forum, but to be fair, it is pretty much an either a good introduction to searching the forum or an indication of any new members innovative capabilities.
Welcome aboard drw58.
I have a feeling that you will do well here

But - actually yes there is
You could either replace the cable before the end bit breaks, and/or add a release cord.
A length of nylon cord securely attached to the release mechanism and threaded out through a hole in the trim panel.
It's a lot easier to get in there before the release breaks Clive

Repair
Hi I take on board mikey comment ref 200 quid but bear in mind Landrover look on this "easy " repair a s a cash cow, that combined with the fact that I had a massive Trans K9 dog box filling the same space my body had to to effect the repair.
I like the idea of having an emergeny pull cord just in case and if I had known about it before I put it all back together again I would probably have put one in.
Certainly recommend it for all you D3 ownwers who haven't experienced the problem.....a stitch in time and all that...be prepared....It's still a landrover expect the worst.
Next challenge the diff lock linkage on my defender TD5, hey but dare I say it thats a whole different forum.
