So,I was on my way up from the main road to the high,exposed windswept moor road that takes me home,when an XC90-owning friend waved me down...."you'd better turn back" he said "its really bad up there"....I looked concerned,nodded my head sagely,and told him I would find a suitable place to turn and head back down...while in my head screaming "you beauty"!...2 years after buying the Disco,I was finally going to use it for the reason I bought it.....!
He was right..it was appalling,the road had disappeared and the snow was driving in horizontally on gale force winds.The stuff that had already fallen was blowing off the moor.....the car was phenomonal.....slipped it into snow mode and I never once felt that I'd bitten off more than I could chew...even after hitting a large drift that was all but invisible in those conditions  (driver error being the only blip).....even going into the deep stuff to let the snowplough pass,it never missed a beat or even suggested it was going to have a problem.
Many Land Rover owners get criticised for owning a car that will never be tested to a fraction of its capabilities,but its nice to know,when you do have a go,that it does exactly what it says on the tin....  "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool,than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

we have had a lot of snow here last night and although the main roads were cleared fairly swiftly the smaller roads (all be it some important routes) have still not been touched
the disco has performed superbly and has towed out a car and 2 vans one van a dual wheel transit luton with tail lift took a bit of bossing had to drag him up a very steep hill  Club original turbo

Trying different settings in snow playing and having fun
We live a long way off- road and within 500 metres of the house I have a 1-7 slope followed by a short 1-4 over a tiny wooden bridge, with a big drop if we slip back. I have had a D2 for several years and could only make this hill in this depth of snow if I used snow chains and with much luck and gritted teeth.
We have had snow every day since Thursday and its been well below freezing throughout. The nearest shop for milk and bread etc is 11 miles each way, so it's essential to have the right vehicle and wow is the D3 the bees knees!
The D3 made it in easily with the GG AT's and using snow setting on the TR. coming down the hill which is usually the worst as you are looking at the drop if you get it wrong, the D3 in snow and high gearbox with HDC was brilliant. I did use the command shift and put in 2nd gear as well.
Learning from the experts on this forum, I tried it with DSC on and off and did prefer it left on going downhill but off going uphill as advised on here.
With the added confidence I stopped half way up the hill which I had never risked in snow before and tried a hill start in high box, snow mode without much success. Dropped into low box, snow mode and the front diff lock came in within seconds and I went up the hill with ease.
The D3 is incredible. I learnt a lot on the LR experience at Eastnor Castle and even more on this forum.
