Discovery struggling to start!

Hi

My 07 xs has a problem - if left for more than, say, 12 hours when I go to start it the engine turns over a bit then nothing then turns over some more then starts. Over Christmas it was left a few weeks and I had what I just mentioned but then jet led to a constant clicking - this was solved with a straightforward jump start which obviously leads me to be pretty sure it's the battery but I do t want to spend on a new one if it could maybe be the starter motor? Had a new alternator a few months ago so I know it's not that - any thoughts guys??

To add more strength to this thought I drove it 130 miles to site last week then during a quiet spell sat inside with radio on for half hour and when I went to start the dreaded clicks were back and I needed a jump start

Thanks in advance

Sounds like a dead/dying battery

My 07 HSE has developed a reluctance to start in these colder temperatures. It takes at least 4 goes to get it going. Farnell's looked at it last week & sid that there weren't any fault codes when they put it on the diagnostic so there can't be owt wrong.
Again, this morning it took another 4 goes to fire up. The manual says in extreme temps it can take up to 30s of cranking to get going, but i don't see how thats possible as the starter moter cuts ous after about 3s.
I might give a new battery a go.

A question for Disco_Mikey please.

Do faulty injectors or glow plugs generate fault codes?

Gkow plugs don't. Injectors only generate a code if rhey are worn, and cause a cylinder imbalance, or have an electrical failure

Mine has been the same.....but I think Disco Mikey can vouch for the "cough" health of my battery after my alternator failure a number of months ago..

too tight to pay for a new one! sick of buying a battery every year.

New battery but still occasionally struggling

Hi

After my last post I got a new battery fitted but was worried to find the problem happened again (albeit nowhere near as bad) when I was down in Somerset yesterday - could it be anything else?

Thanks
Jamed

low pressure fuel pump in the tank...basically the fuel is not being passed from the tank to the engine at correction rate/pressure resulting in the fuel draining back, hence the need to continually crank it to bring the fuel forward and of course why when it sits for extended times the problems seems worse.

I believe there is a diagnostic test that can be done for the fuel pressure, but I'm sure someone will point yer in the right direction.

Thumbs Up
