Mental FBH

Happened a couple of times now – massive (and I mean massive) amount of smoke from the FBH – happened this AM when it wasn’t particularly cold (and engine still slightly warm from trip about 4 hours previous.)
Does it sometimes purge itself? – or should I worry?

I think this is normal. I have only had it once or twice though.

Thanks chaps - I've had an FBH for years, but never noticed this amount of smoke, fills the engine bay and half the road!
Anybody think if 2SO would cause this?

I use 2SO and my heater doesn't smoke. There is a dieselly smell from the exhaust but thats all. I know its working as the exhaust gets hot (not a recommended way of testing if its been running for more than a few seconds)

Generally the only time you get massive amounts of smoke are:-
1. It's been purged by someone with software to do it
2. It's not been running for a while and old diesel has built up so when it does finally fire up, you get smoked
3. It's been trying to run but failing to fire properly so excess diesel may be in there but burning off when it finally does fire up
4. It's the end of summer and its the first time temps have reached less than 5degrees so not been run in a while

Shocked Shocked
What are you running yours on Flack?? Wink

If its "massive" amounts of smoke then its not Normal, but as Bodsy explains, there could be a good explanation.
The cycle the FBH runs through at the end of a run is a so called "cooling", but is there to blow excess diesel out of the chamber ready for the next start. You will often hear the fan (combustion air fan) when you stop the engine. Sounds like there is a definite build up of diesel for some reason. I'm presuming you don't have a BAS remote unit installed?

Thumbs Up

Just been for a short drive to fill up - FBH fired up, normal amount of smoke, usual fan noise when I turned herr off - so maybe was just purging earlier - not my usual driving pattern over past week - a fair few miles followed by a weekend of very short journeys - maybe this made a difference?
