Safe jacking for oil change

[disclaimer - I'm not into/useless at car maintenance - I change the oil/filter between services but suck it out of the top so I don't need to get under]

I need to change the sump plug

1. Is it possible to raise wheel on the vehicle jack and put an axle stand in the recommended position (I've downloaded the D3 jacking guide) or would the jack be in the way?

2. If not, where can you hire a trolley jack these days? - not Hss or webbs

3. I can hire a pr. of wheel ramps from Webbs - would they give me clearance to take the steel plate off - the angle wouldn't matter for drainage cos I'd still have sucked out the oil from top?

For the sump plug:

- Raise air suspension to max.

- Place axle stands under chassis rail so nearly in contact.

[ie never trust the air suspension with your life]

- Crawl underneath and work as required.

- Remove stands.

- Lower car.

Well, it works for me.

Do you mean the car settles onto stands when you turn engine off - cos the pump needs to be running for the car to stay at that height yes?

No, car should stay where it is if all is well - the stands are there in case things are not well.

It may also stop you from crapping yourself when the air suspension farts and self-levels when you have your head underneath.

If you leave a door open, the suspension should stay where it is.

If you don't fancy leaving a door open, then you can remove fuses 3 and 26 from the engine bay fuse box which should prevent any unwanted movement.

I don't know about hiring a trolley jack but I bought the Clarke CTJ3QLG last week. It's essentially the same as the one Robbie has (CTJ3000G) but with a pedal to lift the saddle to the jacking point on the chassis.

The quick lift pedal on mine is OK but you still have to use the handle to position the jack adapter into the locating hole in the chassis.

Avoid the CTJ3000QL as it has been reported to twist under load by some members.

Clearly the fuses only impact the self-leveling 'farts' and in no way replace the use of stands.

it can still drop even with fuse etc removed

its a real bad idea to lie under it at all if it isnt supported by jacks.

I just drive mine onto some heavy duty ramps to drain the oil - you can then get under it even in access mode. then drive it off the ramps to level up and put the final top up of oil in

Ramps would be great if I could hire them anywhere - for some reason - well probably H&S - tool hire shops don't do ramps or trolley jacks. Not worth buying ramps for one job and then nowhere to store them
