ZF GEARBOX OIL CHANGE - WHAT MILEAGE & ZF PARTS DISTRIBU

Like me, no doubt you've not considered the need to change the transmission fluid afterall its always been considered a "sealed for life" unit.

So is that the view shared by the manufacturer ZF and if not when should this be done and where can the parts/fluids be bought and where can the OEM parts be bought outside of the LR network - all is now revealed!

In the following images can be read my initial email to ZF technical, thier response and the enclosed attachments but it would appear that a transmission oil change should be undertaken:

A) 100,000 normal driving conditions

B) 50-70,000 miles OR 8 years in the following circumstance "frequent highway driving in top speed range, offensive, sporty driving style, frequent trailer operation

QUANTITY OF OIL NEEDED as advised by ZF:

1) Normal drain and refill - 5 litres

2) Double flush & refill - 10 litres

OPTIONS WHEN DOING A DOUBLE FLUSH OR BUYING OEM PLASTIC OR METAL PAN

1) You could upgrade to a OEM metal ZF pan filter (as used on BMW gearboxes of the same type), but just as a point of reference the filter is paper so follow this process: drain old oil and then refill with fresh (do not change pan filter at this time), then run the vehicle for a short while changing through the gears, then drain this oil AND THEN CHANGE THE PAN FILTER - reason is the paper filter (which can be bought separately) may not stand up to being drained twice)

2) When ordering the metal pan filter, you will need to order the case connector separately but filter kit does come with the all screws (21 of em)

3) The OEM plastic pan filter does come with the case connector and the upgraded screws but " this is not easy on the L319 because you have to loosen engine mountings and lift the transfer box to gain acess to remove and refit the transmission sump pan" whereas changing over to the new metal type will means they will not and thus saves alot of workshop time/money.

4) The existing LR OEM screws found on yer d3 have now been upgraded so you will need em but after that you can use these again for the next change

5) The existing OEM LR or replacement plastic pan filter screws cannot be used on the metal pan filter so if doing an oil change in the future, make sure you've got the correct screws or changing from a metal pan to a plastic one

I HAVE JUST NEGOTIATED A DEAL FOR AUTHORISED ZF SUPPLIER FOR THE FORUM WHICH INCLUDES THREE VERSIONS OF THE SERVICE KITS AND FREE UK DELIVERY BUT AWAITING PERMISSION FROM MODS BEFORE POSTING AND THEY HAVE A SISTER DEALERSHIP IN MAINLAND EUROPE WHICH MIGHT KEEP THE POSTAGE COSTS DOWN FOR YOU OVERSEAS MEMBERS

Here yer go then, from the top:

50-70,000 - thats interesting.

mine needed doing at 80,000 after what could be described as arduous useage.... So a change at 70k miles would be spot on (3 months before I started having the problem) Thumbs Up

stick them into a PDF document and save as "minimum" - thats easier than resizing in photoshop etc

Don't think anyone will be able to read the info very well, it needs to be scanned and saved as a PDF then it will be easier read.

Look very interesting I would like a look through it. So are saying your getting the fuild delivered for £13 and that 10 litres?
