Power upgrade - TDV6

I know that BRuce Davis in Sydney has developed a chip upgrade for the TDV6, and I also spotted this on ebay - http://tinyurl.com/2kxn5u (Dieselpower) - www.Dieseltuning.ca

Does anyone know anything about this latter upgrade?

cheers,

Simon

Hi Simon, whilst I haven't had a chip upgrade, I have read many of the threads about same here at disco3.co.uk.

Chris from LRTuning explained in many replies that the difference between the add-ons and the software upgrade his organisation does is basically his is not a detectable device (by LR at your next service visit) so therefore does not void the warranty. Surprisingly, many LR dealers in the UK actually use the LRTuning (or whatever the company name is in the UK) software upgrade on their vehicles for sale new (albeit a little dearer than a specialist outfit like LRTuning - presumably because of higher overheads).

Also the addon/plugin "chips" simply fool the fuel supply into allowing a greater of fuel to be available to the engine and consequently improve performance.

There are many other points that I am sure he (or the similar UK companies - at least one of which is a site sponsor) will elaborate upon.

And if a LR software upgrade is necessary, then his "chip upgrade" is reapplied so that you can regain the benefits that are lost by LR returning the settings back to standard.

This is not an advertisement for any particular product (and as I said, I haven't had any upgrades applied by a third party) but you need to consider several things at least:

- Warranty/insurance implications of any external upgrade
- Performance/economy
- Increase in particulates (black smoke from exhausts).

* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

And then you get this information from "Diesel Tuning"...

"Expect approx 28kw & 88nm of torque and better economy by about 1.5L x 100km.

It modifies the signal to the fuel rail to suit the exact rpm and engine speed. It gives it more off idle and cuts it back at full speed (good kick right from the start unlike other tuners that just add more fuel) More fuel at higher pressure at certain RPMs and less at other RPMs to provide more power and economy. Re-mapping is simply dangerous to new CR engines as there is around 400 variations of safety features built into the factory computer which I have never seen programmed into flash tuning. Our tuning modules do not effect that."

Is there a real "truth"?

Simon,

In Australia LRtuning supply both 'plug in' boxes and engine re-maps depending on customer choice.

Technically a re-map is better but a 'plug-in' simpler and more convenient.

What in particular would you like to know?

Pros of diesel box....plug in....+35-40bhp....re-sale value

Cons of diesel box....has to be removed for servicing etc....'dirty hands' installation....overworks the fuel pump...raises fuel pressure continually.

United Kingdom 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Manual Zambezi SilverDiscovery 3

A mate of mine has the Bluefin Module for his Diesel Mondeo, this plugs into the Diag. port and then downloads the cars original map, when this has been saved, he can then upload the tuned map to the car, then the module is removed.
If the main dealer flash his ECU, he can simply reapply the map, also, because he has the original map stored, he can return the car to standard tune for servicing etc.

Is there anything out there for the D3 like this, or what are the negatives of such a device, thanks in advance

Something like this could actually win me over. If i could have the quality remapping with the option to swap back to original, or reapply remapping after service - all for the one time price of £500 to 600 as the bluefin hp quotes - i would go for it. http://www.mybluefin.co.uk/

Cheers
