Which Tyres

Hi All,

Following some good advice from many member of this forum and considering availabilty, I purchased some 17inch rims. (couldnt get hold of any 19inch to run the Goodyear MTRs)

Anyway, got the rims and have Cooper 245/70 R17s on order. Originally these were due to be availble early to mid Jan. I'm now told they are unlikley to be available until early to mid Feb Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

As we have a few events lined up in Jan and the lakes in Feb I'm getting a bit desperate. The SZ's are Ok but they are starting to get a bit of sidewall damage and I can see me having to replace them before the tread goes, which could be expensive.

I choose the ST's as they seemed to be Ok on the road. I will only use them to get to off road places but will most probably be towing a 1600Kg caravan so needed tyres that can handle a 200 ish journey.

Anyway to cut a long story short....

Are there any other option of tyres that will fit, be stable towing a caravan (MTs considered) and that I can take delivery of now??

Sorry for the long rambling message...........................

Cheers

Duncan

Cheers

Thanks Everyone,

After ringing around the 4x4 tyre dealers and scouring the internet I popped in to my local little back street trye dealer and after a few calls he managed to find some STs (in stock Shocked Shocked ), They should be delivered and fitted tomorrow. Just goes to show that its worth supporting the little man Very Happy

Sorry for the late advice but...

ST's are prone to chipping on the tread lugs. The size you have are only available in the normal compound (i.e. not in the antichip compound)

I had a set of ST's and Cooper replaced them (cost me AUD$220) after the lugs started to tear off and chip badly. The chipping mainly occurred on coarse bitumen. The lugs started tearing off after hard 4WDing.

They were replaced after about 8000km use and I now have STT's which have been fine but are a much softer compound.

Noise wise they are about the same for the tyre whine.

Thanks PCH,

I'll see how they fair. I'll only use them for off roading and travelling to events, possibly towing a trailer. For normal driving I'll change back to the Scorpian Zeros. I considered STTs but with motorway driving and towing at 70mph ish I decided against them.

They only cost me £77 each fitted and balanced so not a great loss if they need changing. Unfortunalty they are the only 17 inch option I could find of the same/closest size.

Cheers

Hi All,

I have just replaced my original fitted Continental Contact 4x4 tyres after 14800 miles. I had about 2mm left on the front and 3mm on the rear.

I have now fitted Cooper Discoverer ATR 235x70x17 tyres at £87 per tyre and drove down to the French Alps over the New Year. Tyres handled well on motorways and snow covered mountain roads. The supplier says they should last about 30K milies so double the Continentals life span.

Cheers
Very Happy

England 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Manual Cairns BlueDiscovery 3

Hi, just joined as I want to find some new tyre advice.
After being humiliated in a wet Devon field last year I researched new 50/50 tyres and, like everyone no doubt, was amazed that LR did not recommend anything but the factory fit road tyres despite my pleas that this is supposed to be the best off-road vehicle on the planet. Anyway, eventually went for General Grabber AT2 255/55R18 (I now believe there is a 255/60R18 available as well). Obviously there is slightly smaller rolling circumference than original fit and maybe the car looks very slightly lower. That aside they were fine on road with no appreciable increase in road noise or difference in handling, but not really aggresive enough to get out of that wet grass field still, especially as they have now done about 25,000 miles, and it will be time to change soon.
Out shooting last week I saw some Good Year Wrangler MT/R's on a Range Rover - they looked a treat and certainly seemed to work very well and now I think I want some of those. Didn't really get to talk to the guy enough, apart from him saying that they are fitted to the G4 vehicles, so questions are:-
Has anyone tried them?
Are they available in R18, as their web-site seems to indicate only R17?
Is there a lot of road noise?
Do they handle OK on the road, especially in the wet?
If I need R17 will they look OK and will everything work OK?
If all ok does anyone have any R17 to sell?
Any feedback gratefully received.
Thanks.

Sorry, meant to say that I see on their web-site that Goodyear Silent Armor 265/60R18 exists, does anyone know what these are like? Still prefer the MT/R though.

Welcome to the site ricey Thumbs Up

Have a browse around the answers to all your questions are here but to summarise...
Only D3 suitable size MTR's currently available is 19", a few of us run with them, handling is great, wear exceeds 'standard' rubber, extra noise is hardly noticable

Si

PS. Did you know the load rating on your 255/55 R18 AT2's is too low for the D3?
