Insurance Costs

Dont want this to be an ad for any insurers but thought I would let you know my recent experience of insuring my recent addition to the family (Java V6 SE arrived on Sat).

As I have been in the UK for the past 8 years and had no real need for a car (lived in Central London where cabs almost outnumber cars and the mayor has a major anti-car issue meaning you pay more in parking fines and congestion charges than you do for the car itself) consequently I had no no-claim discount.

Went online - first quote came back at $2500 - bearing in mind the car is garaged, I'm over 30 and have had my licence since 1990 and no accidents in 15years.

I called the insurer directly and was told that they would take my word on the NCB and the quote was now $1072.

Still not satisfied I went online again and found a quote of $666 from another company, after calling up to take this offer I was told that this company wouldnt take my word on the NCB and consequently wouldnt insure me for any price.

Just when I was resigned to paying over a grand, a bloke at work told me of a company that had given him a good quote on his commodore, so after running through the details of my situation they agreed to take me on my word re NCD at a price of $708, new car replacement in the event of a write-off for up to 4 years and a $350 excess.

I reckon thats a pretty good deal. But it highlights the huge divergence of quotes for what really must be a simple actuarial calaculation.

Speaking to my mate from London he tells me he pays 140 pounds per month to insure his 3 year old Audi S3 - thats $4200 per year, for a car thats worth about the same or less than my Disco. Another reason to live in Oz. Very Happy

Things are cheaper in Queensland, over here in NSW and also with a 60% NCB, I am paying $1.5k.
