| OZ tent on expedition rack |

Does anybody know if a packed OZ tent would fit on the original Land Rover Expedition rack without modifying it? It says on the OZ tent site that the bag is 2m long but I only have at max 1,9m in between the front spoiler and the aft horizontal bar of the expedition rack. Is the bag slim enough to pass slightly under the front spoiler and the aft bar to squeeze in?
Is anybody carrying his OZ tent on the Expedition rack? Or did anybody modify the rack so it fits? Did anybody just remove the aft horyzontal bar? Is the rack still rigid enough without this bar? If yes this would be an easy modification to carry the OZ tent.

Hi, I have the same set up and had the same questions as you, my solution was to fit a Rhino rack so all my Oz equipment sits in it nicely. You have to fit a front roof bar to the expo rack so the basket can be attached securely. The problem is finding the roof bar!! Range River fits it. I will post the part number later.

Anybody else (with or without OZ tent) could maybe explain another solution which would be to totally remove the side bars (leaving or not the front spoiler) of the rack. This would I think increase the available space over the then flat rack to carry the OZ tent on the side, together with a pare wheel, sand recovery plates and a storage box.
Anybody did it and could explain how to do it?

With my set up i can carry two large waffle boards, two gerry cans,all my Oz tent equipment and still have available luggage space all confined within the inside of the Expo, the spare wheel stays on the swingout rear carrier. Steve

Anybody did just remove the rear cross-bar? How rigid does the rack stay without this rear cross-bar? Any risk of having the side bars collapsing towards the inside of the rack if rear cross-bar removed?

The way I measured it, the Oz would sit so far back that the tailgate wouldn't be able to lift.
But then, my measuring skills are pi$$ poor (I'm a quantity surveyor ...  )
I carry the oz on roof bars instead. & next time round plan to mount sand ladders 'flat' on the bars, forming the surface for the Oz to lie on.
Oz could be mounted on the bars on top of the Expo ... not very aerodynamic though. Long succession of Disco's since 2001...
SIII Lightweight - neglected & rusting. Bulkhead, A panels, vent panel & outriggers now disintegrated - Next years project!

Yes I have, no loss of rigidity to the rack, drilled out the rivets and replaced them with rivnuts so the rear cross-bar can be replaced / removed when necessary I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Is that an Oz tent I see on top of your expo rack on the Tunis pictures in your gallery? Yes? Did you have any problem opening the upper tailgate with the tent attached to the rack like this? It seems like the easiest and cheapest way to fit the tent on the rack so far:the look of the rack remains, when loaded the material carried stays more discreet than if the sides were removed plus there is plenty of space left on the side to carry other stuff...
Did you experience a lot of offroading in Tunisia with this rack configuration?

By the way which OZ tent model do you have? Is that an RV5 which has the biggest package size? And is it a 255/55-19 wheel next to the tent on the rack?

Hi Christophe,
It is an Oz tent 4 and I had no problem lifting the upper tailgate, I just made sure that the tent was pushed snugly up and under the front valence of the rack, as for off-roading, yes plenty of corrugated tracks as well as the usual dunes, there is also a full size spare on there with plenty of room left
There wasn't any issue with the rack's rigidity and the side bars showed no sign of collapsing inwards  I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Perfect. So I think it's going to be the first thing I will do when I get my RV5: remove the rear cross-bar and see if I can fit everything I want up there: tent, spare wheel (since the RV5 bag is 10cm larger I hope it will work), two 122x31cm waffel boards and maybe an extra alu box.

Hi, I've been following this with interest as I want to do the same thing. But looking at my expo roof rack, can the rivets be drilled out with the rack on the car, or does the rack have to be removed?
