Gearbox Failure at 42k

I'm having no luck with Discovery's just out of warranty.

Having decided to get rid of the D3 when TFC found plastic in the engine oil - http://disco3.co.uk/forum/topic57407.html - I bought a year old D4 from my local dealers.

2.5 years of trouble free motoring, I was towing a trailer (no more than a tonne) for the Scouts summer camp. Going up an incline, I could feel the auto box having trouble deciding what gear to choose so it threw up a "Gearbox Failure" and lost all power. On the hard shoulder, rebooted the car and it pulled off no problem, nothing untoward at all.

Went to the local dealer to where I was and he suggested that there was a software issue when towing heavy loads and an update should be applied. He was busy but said I could wait and see my local dealer on return.

Duly booked it in, they have checked the error codes and LR have advised it needs a new gearbox. Given the fact it's just out of warranty, my continued custom, FSH, LRCC have just offered to pay 33% of the £5,500 this job's going to cost. To say I'm hacked off is an under statement.

Have now to start arguing with LRCC over their offer or might just get it back and get rid. I don't seem to be having any luck with LRs. Its a perfect car for all I need to do, kids, cycling, camping, Scouts and I accept its going to cost a bit more to run but this is getting ridiculous.

Had to vent

John

Over on the RRS forum a member just suffered an engine failure at 150,000 miles. JLR response was they expected an engine to need replacing at 150,000 miles so if you take this logic your transmission is not fit for purpose if it failed at 42,000 miles - Fight it!

Hi G

They thought 150,000 was reasonable wear and tear so no warranty contribution. Not that you need to change them at 150,000, just that his went bang! As we know there are loads here that have done many more miles his was a 2007MY though Confused

Thanks Chaps

I would prefer not to have to get Which involved or have to get into longer protracted arguments in the first place. I get it that its outside warranty and that sometimes things go wrong but this is on another scale financially

Just got a note from the garage that says that "The adaption count on the E clutch of the transmission shows that the gearbox has an internal fault and the complete transmission requires replacing" This is LR's advice allegedly.

Dave

Fully stamped. By the dealer - but with the last one done by TFC at the same time as some mods to the second battery.

I agree about the shouting. Being calm and trying to reason is my usual approach

Liam and Mike now having a look too

Cheers

So, result... of sorts

LRCC upped their offer to 75% and I asked the dealer to see what they could do. They are doing a discount on the hourly rate for me. So bill to me is around £1100 now.

Still hurts but not as bad as initially being told it was £5500.

Big thanks to Mike at LRCC for being responsive.

Fingers crossed that's it for a while

Cheers

John

I think you have done well there. Its not good that it has failed so soon, but Censored happens, and things do break.

75% is better than the 66% I got for a new turbo just 1 month out of warranty.

I would say that's fair enough I know for a fact that Toyota wouldn't stand over a Rav4 engine 13 days out of warranty, ended up cost a friend 2.5k for a 2nd hand one and fit. So you done well, hope things go a bit smoother for the rest of your LR days.
