Handbrake shoe clips forever popping off?
Hey all,
Just had a question back in Sep 2023 i had the low speed squeal from rear wheels and as expected it turned out to be the old handbrake shoe clip had popped off.
Fixed and all good up until Aug 2024 I had my handbrake hardware (including new clips) replaced due to an issue with the old shoes sticking to brand new rear rotors which is now fixed but now a month later it appears that again one of the new handbrake shoe clips has popped off as symptoms are identical to Sep 2023.
I'm gonna check wheel bearings this weekend weather permitting so i can rule it out. But as before its highly intermittent and I can only hear it under 30kpmh.
Has anyone else had these things keep falling off?
Is there any advice anyone can give during installation to stop this from happening?
Was the clips installed in the right direction, if not they can come off. The open end of the clip needs to placed with the wheel rotation.

Hey Flack,
Thanks for the response. Last Sunday I decided to check for myself.
I jacked it up and checked wheel bearing was good which it was.
Wheel was squealing so bad when i turned it I fully expected to see a clip had fallen off but both were in situ. Spinning it a bit more to try and pinpoint location of rubbing it disappeared after 5 or 6 additional rotations.
Confused I looked at clips again and realised the 9 o'clock clip (driver side rear) was installed by my mechanic upside down. The other clip was installed correctly. It's still in place but yeah wrong way around.
I just had a chat to him he doesn't think it would cause the squeak but every single installation video i have seen says to ensure you install them the right way around.
Do you think it's possible it could cause one of the shoes to intermittently rub on the disc if one clip is installed upside down?
I basically said to him I want it installed the right way around regardless of whether it fixes the rubbing or not. Today I'm gonna check passenger side as well to check those clips. Normally i leave brakes to the professionals but these days good mechanics are hard to find.Aidan

Decided to check passenger side rear as well (the one with no sound) and both clips are installed correctly. I'm fairly certain it's the incorrectly installed clip causing the noise will get it fixed and report back as i didn't find anyone else having this particular issue when searching.Aidan

Check the backing plate isn't rubbing on the disc, the flat bit just above the PB shoes can rub on the disc as the backing plate expands with rustD4 GS let the retro fit begin
