Torque Converter Removal

Just in the middle of dropping the gearbox to change the Torque Converter on my 55 plate D3 HSE.
Question - you I have to take the Torque Converter out at the same time as the 'box or can it be left on the flywheel??

Generally speaking the answer to your question is no!

Unlike a manual box where you have a certain amount of movement without too much risk of damage, an auto transmission has a very much lesser window of orientation. There is a very real risk of damage to the TC flange, its seal, splines, or the input drives if you missalign either the removal or reassembly. For this reason it is easier and safer to drop the TC with the box. Technically it can be done, but only with the right equipment, and without same the risk of damage to the transmission/TC is IMHO therefore ill advised!!

Good answer - many thanks Very Happy Very Happy

On the plus side I now know it is possible to change the tranfer box, gearbox and torque converter in a home garage with just a reasonable toolbox and lots of pieces of wood!!!

Might have been easier if I didn't have a HUGE cold but hey-ho.

...and make sure the Cross over pipe is fixed back onto the housing. My local indy changed the TC and forgot to bolt down the Cross over pipe. 500 mls later on the freeway in France it split and I was driving James Bond style leaving Lots of smoke behind me. Costly Mistake for the indy.
