Sorry, there seems to be a fair bit of info on here regards these subjects but I'm a bit of a novice in this area and have got a tad confused.
I'm looking for a bike rack that is easy to mount/dismount and can take 4 bikes, would prefer it to fold up when against the rear when not in use.
First question:
Do I need a tow bar and a rack that fits to one or are there solutions that don't require a tow bar (for rear mounting, I'm not keen on the roof mounting idea).
If I need to retrofit a tow bar what do I need to get and how easy to fit?
What bike rack should I go for?
Thanks and apologies for my ignorance!

for four bikes, then I would say you need a tow ball rack (I have the LR detachable tow bar). I use a THULE and it is a solid as a rock, takes about 5 mins to attach.
as for getting a tow bar... look on ebay for a 'detachable' LR towbar... there are always loads on there for sale (£120 -£250)... you take the red cap out of the rear and hey presto... to bar fitted in under a minute Still miss my D3
