Tow Trust TL1 welding question

Hi folks,

Recently fitted one of the above bars to my D4.

Whilst poking about earlier I happened to look down on the flange that you bolt the tow ball to, and thought that the welding looked odd.

Nice big looking weld on the outside, but should the inner edge (marked) also be welded?

Has that been missed on mine, or are they all like that?

Apols for the blurry image - phone camera focused in the wrong place!

Cheers

Mark

I'm no welder, but doesn't look right to me. I would have thought that they should be 90 degrees to each other as opposed to bent inwards as they are. then welded both sides.

Yeah, exactly what I thought.

I've emailed the company's tech support folks to see what they say, as well.

Cheers

As above... that doesn’t look right at all. If it needed to be at an angle then the end should have been ground to a matching angle to it so it sits flat and then welded on both sides. Even if they say that’s the way they all are I wouldn’t be happy.

Thanks, and that's why I thought I'd ask here as well, as I know a number of people here have those bars fitted.

Good news is that they responded quickly, I've provided some extra details and they've gone off to check.

Cheers

That's not right. It appears to have missed a welding op.

The top and bottom of the plates should be welded too.

Here is my TL1 photographed just now.

Can't see any weld on the inside of that one, but it is certainly much squarer, and welded across the top!

So annoyed I didn't spot it at the time I fitted it, although I recall it was a right job to get those bolts to close up.

Thanks

I’m not a welder but have seen a lot of fabrication work in my time, the op’s one looks flat out dangerous and ready to fail. The other 2 look incomplete to me. Surely that should be fully welded. The welds on the second and third photo don’t look the best either.

1 inch of weld (full penetration) should be able to cope with 1 ton of load. So for a towing point that is 2x GVW of the vehicle (7 ton) there should be at least 7 inches of full penetration weld.

We had a similar issue on some prototypes when out in Sweden a few years ago, the weld looked great, but it was only on one piece and was effectively no more than a simple tack. When we needed to recover the car, the tow bar came with the rope leaving the car there.

I would consider getting in touch with Trading Standards if you've got any concern as that could be a liability in an accident.

Cheers guys.

Not heard anything else back yet, guess they're all done for the day.

I've sent in some clearer pictures, and pointed them at this thread too.

See what tomorrow brings.

Thanks for the input,

Mark

Looking at that, I can't see a weld on the inner edges although you do look to have welds across the top.

If there were no welds across the top and ONLY on outer edges then it's like having an ultra stiff hinge.

So … with enough resistance from a trailer/tintent, it would pull the plate backwards and the inner edges would come away from the plate … and it would look like the picture in the original post.
