Tow-Bar electrics
Hi all , Im hoping someone out there can help me . Im new to this , but I have a D4 and I love it .
So heres my problem . Im trying to change the trailer plugs from 7 pin 12N and 12S to 13 pin . So far ive taken off both plugs , after a struggle ! and connected the 12N ( black plug ) cables to the new 13 pin plug as the color codes match the numbers on the plug . However , the 12S ( white plug ) cables dont match the color code numbers ! For instance where there should be a Pink (reverse) , Orange(prem power) etc; I have Red/White , Pink/Blue , Yellow/Brown , and two White one marked 3 and the other marked 7 !!! Which is only 5 cables not 7 !! Has anyone come across this same problem and if so did you manage to solve it . Would really appreciate any help if pos .

You probably could have saved a lot of hassle and just bought a converter. There’s even an approved LR version, I bought mine for £5 off ebay and it only adds about 10” of cable length.
Is your existing loom a LR product?
Below is a Halfords adaptor but as I said, I got a second hand LR one off eBay for £5.

^^ no you cant do that as 12S and 12N would use up both holes, so you cant have 12S, 12N and 13 pin as that would need 3 holes - you could have 12N and 13pin.

The problem I still have though , are the colors on my 12S such as Pink/Blue , Red/White , Yellow/Brown , and the two white cables marked 3 and 7 ! what do they represent ? Like , is the Yellow/Brown "Reversing" , is the Pink/Blue "Positive Ignition" and which of the white ones is earth 3 or 7 ??

So easy bit first, the 2 white cables you have on pins 3 and 7 of your 12S plug are both earths (thats what those 2 pins are) as the caravan fridge has its own earth return.
With regards colours, what number pins were yours connected to (or have you just disconnected them all ), as all you needed to do was take the same wire from whatever pin it was in the 12S to the new pin number in the 13Pin socket.

Ditch the lot and just buy a genuine 13pin kit. Plug and play on later motors

and just to add to that, if you have the genuine LR loom, it come in 2 sections, so you dont have to change the whole lot, just the bottom half which is the part the sockets are attached to.

Wish it were as easy as you say . Ok , the plug is off the D4 , the loom is genuine LR as the back of the plug is sealed in sealant ! Ive taken the sealant out with only 5 cables showing . They run in this line ; No1 Pink/Blue , No7 White , No4 Yellow/Brown all in a strait line . Then , all in a strait line , No2,White , No7 White (as before) No5 Red/White . That is how the cables are connected . 1 to 4 , 2 to 5 with 7 in the middle . If I work on the proviso that No1 pin is the reversing light (Pink/Blue) what are the others !! No7 pin is white and ill take that as the earth , but what of the rest !! Confused.com Appreciate your help
Forgot to mention that the first 7 pins on the 13 pin plug i have connected , as all colors correspond with pin numbers . its 8 to 13 that I need help to figure out

You might be able to narrow down what some of the wires do by testing them? ie, reverse which will be live when reverse is selected and not when it isn't selected. Indicators, on, off, on, off etc.
Then if you can ID which is which, connect them following a diagram for a 13 pin plug.
I toyed with the idea of just buying a 13 pin and swapping the wires from my 12S and N, but then the wife sold her horse trailer so I didn't bother.
Good luck and hope you get it sorted.

Like I said earlier, save yourself the hassle and risk of blowing your BCM and buy an adapter! Even LR ones new are reasonable, saves hacking looms up and gives you the best of both worlds.
p.s. if it’s to late, make sure you seal the back of the new connector as it will corrode badly sat where it is and corrosion there will play havoc with tour entire car.012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)
