The OP's solution is a nice compromise - just need to find a cheap source for a spare cover.

It's not a PITA to remove if you do this Thumbs Up

For this I would recommend wiring in a Ctek comfort connector that can be hidden behind the bumper and wired into the electrics in the rear LH lower cubby via the grommet for the tow electrics.

Love M3DPO's washer solution to the tow electric cover.
My next project is sorted!
Excellent Thumbs Up Bow down
I used to use my D3 key blade but the D4 has a smart key meaning it has become a PITA. Very Happy

Oh how simple the washer idea is, I use an old dog tag on my keyring at the moment this would be much better - thanks

Rather than mess about cutting washers and trying to glue them on I just clipped a fat washer onto my key ring Thumbs Up

Yeah, but you've still got to fumble about on your knees in the dark to find the slit with your fingers to put "fat wasser" in Thumbs Up Rolling with laughter

In the Harley Davidson MT350 tool kit there was a little unknown tool that often got lost. This was for the plastic engine cover screws.

I may have a couple lying round in a box somewhere and they'll be easy enough to fabricate out of ally and stick on your keyring.

Circled in red:

 De-Tango
V8 Brakes
EGRs blanked
Running boards
3 flash indicators and clock on dash
Blingy grille...
