Towing and carrying bikes
Hi
LR are fitting a detachable towbar to my D4 on Friday. They assure me that I can buy a bike rack that fits this towbar and pull my caravan at the same time.
Try as I might I can't find a bike carrier to fit.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Witter make a bike rack for their detachable tow bar - only thing is, the rack part has to be permanent fit
Not heard of an LR option

I've not heard of 1 that will clamp to the ball and tow at the same time!!!
You could get a fixed towbar mount a bike rack to that and tow at the same time.

There is one - it is expensive BUT it will not work if your caravan has the AL KO stabiliser hitch OK with the BPW Winterhof hitch.

Here in Norway many with caravans use one of these to clamp the bike carrier on. Which basically is one of these mounted on a piece of steel.

Roof bars and bike carrier would be a more popular option.

OK, I'm not a caravan person, and this might be a silly question, but why not just put the bikes IN the caravan?

There isn't a LR bike carrier that can be used with the detachable tow bar. If they were to fit the multi-height tow bar then you could fit the LR rack.
My only concern is whether you would have enough clearance between the bikes and the a-frame of the caravan. I would be surprised if this would work and would therefore speak to the dealer about hanging fire on fitting it. You may get away with hanging the bikes on the LR rack (with a multi-height bar), providing the wheels are removed.
Isn't it more likely to be the pedals or handlebars that would foul? Note that the LR rack for the M/H tow bar prevents access to the boot, probably due to it being a carry-over from the D2.
Cycles on roof bars seem a great idea until you have to put them on and take them off. Step-ladder or side steps seem required unless you're 6'4" or over.Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana
I have carried 3 bikes and towed a box trailer at the same time, no trouble. There are many forum members who tow vans as well with one fitted

That's what I did last summer, and it worked super!

The bikes are charged easily and it still allows good manoeuvring while towing...
It also allows you to use the bike carrier as a bike parking when you're in the camping or mounting it to the D3 and carry the bikes with you, while the caravan stays in the camping...
No height problems!
