Towing a D3
Need to get my car towed to a garage. Will it do it any mega damage being in neutral and towing it about 7 miles very slowly ? Apparently the garage cant use their flat bed as it is bust and it will be on a fixed frame so no need to brake etc ? Appreciate it isn't ideal but is this going to be OK ? Thanks JamesJames favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

does the link not refer to D4 ? (ignore what year you select ... it just seems to change the page header)
Mr K ... auto or manual ? I seem to recall removing prop shaft(s) was an option too..

Auto, garage said he thinks towing it 6 miles will be fine. To be honest the engine has died so least of its worries ! and yep the link wouldn't work for me.
may put the battery on charge so at least they can have it switched onJames favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

Towing it for 7 miles could do serious damage to the gearbox. If the engine is repairable, the gearbox might not be.Richard

This is exactly why I was keen to know. Garage are adamant that for a short distance at low speed it would be fine. But you think it wont be !!James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

Ok so gave in and did something i never thought i would. I opened the manual. According to the manual it can be towed on 4 wheels for a maximum of 50 km at a speed below 30mph.
Anything after that could cause issues.James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

states up to a maximum of 50 km. so guess continuously ? Garage is only 7 miles away and hopefully will be Ok.
If the engine is really dead then I will be stripping it for parts or selling as is. Really hoping it may start up once we know what it has done, but not holding out much hope to be honest. clinging on the hope the that there were no big bangs or clatters it may be OK.......James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.
Is it not the transmission rather than engine that gets stressed by towing? Assume that could be a big part of the salvage sale if it comes to that??.

Just take the propshaft off. No risk in damaging the transmission then

Don’t forget no lump spinning = naff all braking for the car being towed.

Thanks DSL. Believe the garage have a fixed tow bar Jobby. Essentially what they use to tow it will also be the brakes. To be honest sort of past caring and just want it off our drive !!James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.
