At the weekend I left a deposit on a D4 and will hopefully collect it in the next week or two. Ideally I would like to tow it on my Ifor LM146 beavertail. I believe it will fit having measured, but would hate to make the 3 hour trip only to find I cannot get it loaded.
Ideally I would find someone local that I could hook my trailer up so I can test load, but I do not know anyone with a towbar or a big enough vehicle locally.
I realise I am pushing the length, but will it fit?

Discovery 4 is 4838mm long and 2022 wide,
LM146 trailer is 4240mm long and 1980 wide.
The distance from the front of the front tyre to the rear of the rear tyre is 365cm. This means the length or the trailer bed is suitable. I have a winch on the front of the trailer, but at normal height the D4 will clear this, so it will sit far enough forward. The width of the outside track (measured at the rear wheels) is 190cm, so the trailer bed at 197cm is wide enough. I believe you can legally have upto 100cm overhang at the rear. I believe it will fit, but the proof is I'm the pudding...

It's been a while since I did all this but I'm sure it's more than 1m, might be 2m overhang at the rear. You'll also need towing mirrors?

Be careful. Putting the D4 up high on a beavertail can make for a very unstable rig.Richard

Then you get the added benefit of driving home in your new D4, permagrin attached of course.
But I’m sure you’ve already considered that. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

It would be overweight as well if you where stopped, I believe these trailers are 3t gross not net.
I once transported a 20' x 8' caravan 70 miles on a 14' Ifor, the wheels of the caravan hung over the trailer body and I was stopped by the police, once I showed them the receipt they let me continue.It can when others can't,

I don't know if they have changed but the current rating for the LM146 is 3500kg gross with the unladen of 725kg making it close to but not over the limit.
More of a problem with the wheelbase being a good part of the bed length is going to be getting the balance, it might have to go on backwards in view of the axle weights.A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

It technically will fit but it will tow like crap and most likely scare the living daylights out of you. You have no margin for moving the load back and forth to balance nicely and the short trailer will want to pitch back and forth as well as being less stable. I used to use a 16ft twin axle for moving discos and it wasn’t a nice experience, I now use an 18ft tri axle and it is as stable as anything.
I think HairyFool and Nc1989 have raised the most important points. There is a lot of weight that I will probably not be able to balance well onto such a short trailer. While it will fit and could be towed it would be 'sub-optimal'. Going down the M40 at Stokenchurch might be interesting.
Adding in my availability and the fuel costs, I think it may be better to take up the delivery option with the trader selling the car. The irony is the 4.5 years ago I could have walked to them, but now I am a 3 hour drive away.
I will post some photos of my new purchase in time and I will need a new Disco 4 sticker too.

I'm going to agree with the rest and say it will not be a fun journey. I have two LM146, one is a triaxle which I'd probably say would be fine but I dont think I would do a long journey with the twin. CoG would be very high and not much wiggle room.
Ive towed D2s on the LM146 and it wasnt too bad, but it was behind a LWB double cab tipper transit which are very forgiving with load distribution.
I have paid for delivery based on the feedback given. The delivery price initially sounds high, but once you factor in the cost and time for me to collect it is a fair price.
I will add photos when I her a chance and there will be a D4 for sale here later in the month.
