Towing and uprating the brakes

Just wondered people’s opinion
I tow a caravan round south of France for 4 weeks in August and it’s 8 meters long 1600kg
Is it worth updated to grooves and vented discs on the front as people say the brakes can over heat on the downhills in the mountains
Thanks a lot peps

Ive just upgrade my front brakes to the v8 spec, and I can tell you that this has made a massive difference.

Only took about half a day to do it myself, but could be probably done a lot quicker if you know what you are doing and stuff isn’t too heavily rusted.

If you haven’t got a v8 upgrade, might that be more value than grooved discs?

I thought they were vented anyway Question

Advanced factors sell upgrade kits.

Also look at upgrading the rear

I wouldn't pay loads more money for drilled and grooved.

grooved ones keep the pads clean, but you can feel the grooves thru the pedal when braking hard.

Many people upgrade the brakes to V8 spec but given the vehicle has been tested towing 3.5 tonne over hilly terrain, I cannot see you should have a problem, given you drive sensibly and use engine braking appropriately.

You need the v8 brake calliper carriers and the v8 disks.

Pads, sensors, carrier bolts etc all remain the same.

RLR019625 FITTING KIT (springs that hold pads in) £4.51
RSEH500013 Calliper carriers (need 2j £41.51 each
RSEM000024 brake pad sensor wire (need one - could go OEM for this as cheaper) £18.96
RSYG500050 Calliper carrier bolts (need 4) £4.39

Including vat, £148.67 from my local LR dealer - these are all LR parts.

Got the pads from Pete Vardy on ebay £37 plus postage .... best price for genuine LR pads I could find

Got the discs from eBay, £50 the pair, but again best I could find for genuine LR discs.

Actually looks like the discs are sold out, but there are two sellers selling one each for £30 ea, which is still a helluva lot better than a lot of OEM disks. Here and here

The part numbers from the LR dealer have an R in front of them all. Drop the R to search for them on the web

You could get away with just changing the discs and the carriers I guess, and reuse everything else, but I think the general consensus is to replace pads when putting new discs in.

Would highly recommend a new fixing kit as well, just to minimise chance of pads sticking and wrecking your new disks,

And you have to be damn careful not to break the sensor cable taking it out. So likely going to need one.

The calliper carrier bolts are easy to reuse, just need some thread lock, but new bolts come precoated.

You get new calliper bolts with the genuine pads and the calliper carriers, so you get a spare set, but does mean you don’t need to buy these.

One of the best mods I did to my D3 HSE was to fit V8 discs all round (I did the fronts first).

I used genuine LR parts bought at a discount from TLO (those were the days).

Get the kit from AF and it takes 30 minutes a side.
The D3 stops better than SWBOs D4 now Smile

Get her D4's brakes checked then, as that shouldn't be the case. Thumbs Up
