TPMS and MOT

Hi,

I have swapped my D4 standard wheels and tyres with TPMS for a second set of the non-TPMS tyres/wheels.

I have turned TPMS off in the config file with the IIDTOOL so I don't get any tell-tale warnings on the dash.....

Anyone know if when the car goes in for MOT next year will this be a fail for the car?

Thanks

JC

I'd be more concerned about my insurance company than the MOT. For the later, if there's no warning light to indicate a fault for the TPMS system, I can't see how they'll be any the wiser.

For your insurers, well that's a big can of worms if you had a claim as a result of a tyre malfunction! You've deliberately switched off a safety system that was a mandatory requirement from November 2104.

Hi,

Thanks.
Had a look at the website.

I've notified my insurer that I have swapped to all year all terrain tyres/wheel on the car.
No questions or discussion on TMPS.

As you say without a fail light how would anyone know - lack of tell tale TPMS valves......

The TPMS system is still 'working' fine. Its just not monitoring anything anymore....

So would it fail the MOT and do I need to get some TPMS valves installed and calibrated?

It went through the LR service last year fine with the wheels/tyres fitted and the dash warning showing and no comment from the dealer.

Thanks

JC

My understanding is if the TPMS is required for that build year in legislation then it is required to be working correctly for MoT purposes, same as for lights, seat belts or airbags etc.

Now whether the tester is on the ball enough to notice is another matter.

My understanding is that for the likes of TPMS, ABS etc. the tester can only look for warning lights. Happy to be corrected if that's incorrect.

As already stated, I'd be much more concerned about insurance.

I'd just buy a set of TPMS valves for the rims.

Hi again,

Why buy and fit them and calibrate them if they are not needed......?
I really don't see the benefit - safety (?) or otherwise......

If the tyres are going down I can see that before entering the car.....
I don't need a whole lot of electronics to tell me that.

With have a Audi A4 with this fitted and it throws errors without reason......

Thanks

The TPM all comes from problems in US with Ford Explorers crashing ( and killing occupants) having had tyres failing catastrophically , cost Ford and Bridgestone $millions to replace tyres on all the vehicles , both blaming each other, mostly about under-inflation of tyres. Like a lot of things the legislators decided it would be a good thing to have pressure monitoring on all vehicles. Owners just don't check their vehicles anymore , just get in and drive relying on the vehicle to tell them if something is wrong.

I had a puncture on the M5, the system warned me and worked as it should.
If you’re happy to disable a safety system, that is a legal requirement, without informing your insurers that you’ve done so, that’s up to you. Thumbs Up

Hi,

I've been driving non-TPMS vehicles for longer than I want to remember all over the world.
I can count the number of punctures (7ish) and blowouts (1) without taking my shoes and socks off.

10+ years on my D3 and 1 year on the D4 and no punctures or blowouts.....

None of them would have been 'improved' with TPMS.

Not quite sure it is intended as a safety system, rather another expensive set of electronics that may or may not work as intended and need fixing at some point.....

How many D3s and D4s out there without TPMS?

(/sceptic-off)

Thanks
JC

I don't disagree, I have a vehicle with no ABS and have managed not to crash (so far), but you're missing the point. Which is that your insurance premium is calculated by taking into account the safety systems on the vehicle using the ABI rating system (Thatcham Research) which includes, amongst other things, Driver Assist Technologies and Safety Systems such as the TPMS system.

Personally, I'd not want to disengage a Safety System that is a legal requirement for the vehicle without having written authority from my insurers. Thumbs Up

Hi,

Not sure where you are going with this......

When I went from D3 to D4 the premium went up and I had to pay for a tracker so that my insurer would cover the car for being stolen........

At worse this is a non-material breach.
I have chosen to turn it off, as I can with the central locking, the eco-start/stop and other systems on the car.........

I've notified my insurer that I have fitted AT/Allweather wheels and tyres and no mention was made by either party regarding the TPMS.......

Thanks

I fitted AT3s on some RR supercharged wheels and added new TPMS. For £100 it wasn't worth the agro of having something disabled.
 Last of the D4 HSE...

Did you inform your insurer that you had fitted non-standard wheels?
Clear foul with insurers such as RSA/SmartWheels who even list stickers on a car as 'modifications' in their T&Cs.

#Bonkers!!!!!

The D4 was likely to be of a higher value than the D3, hence the requirement for a tracker and the higher premium.

There is no button/switch to allow owners or users of the D4 to disable safety systems such as ABS, TPMS or any airbags other than the front passenger seat. You need access to specialised equipment to do so.

Why would your insurer ask you if you're disabling the TPMS system when you're changing wheels and tyres? They wouldn't, as per the above paragraph.

The insurers not asking, is very different from you not informing them. Thumbs Up
